I’d be interested to know whether any board members would care to comment as to whether they’ve enjoyed Village level whites more than reds, or vice versa, or in general, they feel they’re more or less equal in terms of quality?
Really depends on the producer, of course.
Roumier’s Chambolle, Fourrier & Bachelet & Burguet’s Gevrey, Lafarge’s Volnay VS, Mugneret or Arnoux’s Vosne are all spectacular wines. Then again so are Roulot’s Meursaults or Leflaive or Ramonet’s village offerings. Overall I think there are more excellent village reds but the best village whites are perhaps actually better?
Lafarge Volnay VS and Mugneret Vosne and Roumier Chamoblle and Fourrier Gevrey vs. Ramonet Ensengieres and Roulot Mon Tesson and Leflaive Puligny and Coche Meursault?
I’m happy to drink them all, and most are better than the vast majority of 1er’s out there.
I’d agree that producer, and vintage of course, make all the difference. Leflaive’s Bourgogne Blanc can be lovely, for instance! Not terribly cheap though…
In general, I often find the better village wines produced by Domaines, rather than negociant offerings. If the Domaine owns a village parcel, it will likely benefit from the same sort of vineyard management and cellar techniques, and will not be a mass blended wine from many different sites as well…
I couldn’t tell you why but I enjoy almost every white burg I try but Im very picky with the reds.
A bit different with me, Berry. I find most whites pretty awful these days and I am rarely disappointed by reds though of course I choose with care. So many whites now seem to be thoroughly nasty fruity chardonnays, the antithesis of what white burgundy should be about. Of course, if one sticks to Coche, Leflaive and Roulot it’s a different story, but with so many others the village wines are just as disappointing as the GCs.
Of course, producer usually means the most. But, if you’re trying to generalize…which it seems this question is…
In my experience, certain villages’ wines , in red and white, seem more reliable than other villages…I think Puligny villages is almost always a reliable buy; likewise, Chambolle, and, particularly Vosne red villages. The others are more diverse…though if you include the lieux dits of Meursault as villages…they are generally pretty reliably good. I guess almost any villages that is a lieu dit is a better bet, come to think about it.
