BURGUNDY CLOSE OUT - Volnay sub-$36 plus Baby Corton, & Corton-Charlemagne & more on DEEP Discount

The importer for these great Burgundy are closing these out, it is time to make room for the 2023s arriving soon! The prices on these are the lowest I have seen in a LONG time for not just this brand but ALSO for a wine from these appellations! We have mostly Premier Cru here including a knockout baby Corton-Charlemagne and Corton rouge!

Last month I had the opportunity to try the 2023 vintage from Chanson and walked away very impressed after tasting 12 wines! The oak that I used to detect in these wines was pulled back A LOT. Before that, I have not had any of their wines since 2014-2016 vintages. According to Chanson’s export director, Vincent Wallays, the winemaking has moved on from those years. There is less whole cluster in the reds, though still maintaining a pretty high percentage for all reds it does change with the vintage. Most importantly the amount of oak has changed, dropping the use of new oak a lot to 15-25% depending on the wine and the vintage.

If I had to pick a few of these on the list as MUSTS, I would choose the Premier Cru Pernand-Vergelesses ‘Les Caradeux’ 2022 (baby Corton-Charlemagne), then the Volnay 2018, and then Premier Crus Les Vergelesses (baby Corton rouge), and the Beaune 1er Clos du Roi! Though everything is priced to move!

Please reply here with any order request, these wines are in stock later this week!

Best from 2029 through 2048.
Vineyard: South of the Corton hill, Domaine Chanson owns 5.3 hectares of “Les Vergelesses,” the most renowned Premier Cru that gave its name to the village of Pernand.

Tasting Note:
Medium ruby color. Medium+ nose of delicate floral notes with more intense aromas of red berry and cherry fruits, a hint of sandalwood and spices from the judicious use of new/used oak. Well-balanced and complex with well-integrated silky, and fine tannin. A velvety finish with slightly spicy notes and persistent red fruits and florals. A beautiful, typical expression of Volnay.
Vintage notes: After a rainy winter and March, spring settled in firmly in April with the first days of warmth. The mild weather of May and early June encouraged rapid vine growth. The summer was very warm, bordering on drought from the lack of rains that led to an early and uncomplicated harvest to start on August 28th.
Vineyard: Monthélie is a small village to the west of the hill, which also includes the village of Volnay. Clos Gauthey is located in the heart of the appellation between the villages of Meursalt and Pommard.

The cherry and strawberry flavors are accented by cranberry and sweet spices in this taut, firm-edged red. Well-structured, this finds a nice equilibrium as the finish lingers. Best from 2027 through 2035.
Vineyard: Chanson owns 1.1 hectares of this vineyard located in the heart of the Premiers Crus of Santenay, a small village south of the Côte de Beaune. The plot is located at the top of the hill and is spread over two levels. The soil, with its high proportion of pebbles, gives the wine a beautiful minerality.

Another fullish yellow. Here the fresh white fruit nature of Pernand powers through the Chanson style. This fills the palate without excess, though still with a few oak tannins, before the classy white fruit returns behind. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted Oct 2023.

Pale gold color. Sleek and focused, exhibiting lemon, apple, vanilla and clove flavors. Vivid acidity drives through the mouthwatering finish, showing excellent balance and length. Well-shaped minerality. Well-balanced and well-structured with dense and precise textures. Long and refreshing finish with salty tinges.
Vineyard: This 1.8-hectare vineyard is ideally located mid-slope on a hillside near the Corton-Charlemagne vineyards. It shares the same geology and is at the same altitude as its illustrious neighbor, but differs in its east-facing exposure. An exceptional terroir marked by intense minerality.

Racked to tank. Mid yellow colour. There is a little creamy touch to this, quite generous in style, though the oak marries well with the fruit. Good acidity, not quite fully integrated, a little lime touch at the back. Fair length Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted Oct 2023.

There’s a toasty graham cracker and butter overlay to this white, with a core of lemon and apple fruit. Sleek and focused, this shows fine balance and stony length. Drink now through 2028.
Vineyard: Savigny’s white wines are rare, as the vineyard primarily produces red wines. The unique nature of the soil in this “Hauts Marconnets” vineyard, with its high proportion of limestone marl and sand, prompted Chanson to plant the vines with Chardonnay rather than Pinot Noir. The 2.1-hectare vineyard is ideally located at the top of the Savigny hillside, facing east.
