Building a subterranean wine cellar/root cellar

how do you decide how much rebar to use and where to lay it?

Every other course is what’s called a bond beam where rebar is laid horizontally.

Every other cell in the cellar wall has rebar running vertically.

They are tied together with wire where they cross. The walls will be pumped full of concrete. When it dries the entire structure, walls and floor, become one piece.

Continues to look great Brian!

You and Chateau Siran will have the best looking bunkers going.

Concrete day. Yesterday my neighbor asked if he could borrow my laser level and grade stick, I said I’ll trade for a cement mixer. He delivered it! Started the day moving concrete from a pallet in the front yard to the backyard. Cut rebar and tied it up in a grid supported by concrete blocks. 39 bags into the mixer and into the form. Added vertical rebar when things set up a bit. Then I added a couple heavy coats of liquid rubber to the outside of the cellar walls. Man I’m sore.

Next weekend I’ll work on finishing the stairs. Fingers crossed. Then I can schedule the pumper come out and fill all the block walls with concrete. The clock is ticking, the rainy season starts Halloween (if we have any rain this season). Need to have a structure atop this cellar before then.

Very sorry for your loss - may he RIP.

Somehow skipped this thread for quite some time, however second what someone else mentioned, this might be the posting thread of the year.

Fantastic effort and I am deeply impressed.

Yep, I get on this site every Monday and as soon as there’s time, head over here and check out this thread.

Laid about 60 blocks today, tore up my shin, wrecked my back, the usual. Got about 40 more to do as well as mortar all the stair treads and caps in the landing which should go well tomorrow. With any luck I’ll be able to schedule the concrete pumper Monday. Fingers crossed.

what’s that last picture, B? Your shin?

Definitely his shin. Kinda looks like he died.

Yeah, it was before I took a shower. I was filthy.

Progressing pics looking impressive as per usual Brian. Don’t strain yourself too much and stay safe, and relatively injury free.

Thanks for taking us on this journey.

I debated between your shin and a dirty old concrete pipe.

This is amazing!

Wow. I haven’t checked this thread for a while.

Brilliant work Brian. Even the way you built the stairs. I’ve never done much concrete work so I’m learning through your pics.

And sorry to hear about your Dad. Good that you were there with him.

And when it’s done the dogs are going to be happy to have a nice cool place to lie down.

Brian, it is amazing how much progress you have made since we saw it in early August! Fantastic work!

No more blocks to lay!!! [dance-clap.gif] Didn’t get the treads on the landing or the final step set with mortar yet but finished all the block work. Thank God!

Started out the day moving the last of the blocks from the pallets in the front to the backyard. Then I dug and dug and dug moving soil that was piled up from the excavation. I needed to find original grade so I would be sure my stairs were the correct height. Then I proceeded to finish the remainder of the stairs before backfilling that work to grade. Then I finished laying blocks around the staircase. After that I could measure the width and depth of all the walls surrounding the work in order to calculate how much concrete will be required to fill them. Laid and tied the last of my rebar and set caps atop the wall temporarily. I had exactly enough. Lucky guess I figger. Took a short break mid-day to watch the GIANTS 9th inning clinch and a bit of the celebration. Then it was back to the salt mine. Was freaking 90+° all weekend. I’ll bet I sweat a few gallons of water in two days.

There will be a lot more soil and about 5yds of gravel to move, along with setting all the treads and caps before this portion is done, but the light at the end of that tunnel is getting bright.
