One of my two Breezaire cooling units has ice built up on the back grate inside the cellar. The temperature gauge reads a normal 58 degrees. However, it appears the unit is running constantly, at least every time I’ve checked. Anybody seen this before?
Needs to be cleaned. Shut it down. Let it thaw and then use a mini vacuum with a micro attachment (home depot has them) to clean out the fins in the front and in the back. You can use a dust melting spray if it is really bad
Thanks Scott.
I do this at least twice a year. My breezaire has been going fine since 1999 and I have only had to replace the thermostat. I also took the front plate off (rivets and replaced with screws) so that I can install a filter on the front which helps keep the dirt out of the coil fins.
I typically clean mine at least twice a year as well. I guess it hand a mind of its’ own and decided to get dirty faster than the schedule PM. I vacuumed it nice and clean and it’s been sitting unplugged since waiting for the ice to melt off and the unit to fully defrost. Interesting enough the other unit was even dirtier than this one but it seemed to be working just fine, cycling properly, etc… It is carrying the load right now while the other one defrosts.
Check the drain plug, make sure it is not obstructed. Also, these units can’t reduce temp much more than the 19 degrees below in the exhaust air temp, so make sure the area you are venting into is well ventilated… sounds like your machine is working full time to get to a temp out of its range.
Just traded out my Breezaire for a Cellar Pro.
The symptom of icing can also be caused by low refrigerant. If that is the case… cheaper to replace it. It would mean a leak in the cooling coils… which can be a micro-leak. If you get it fixed (no inexpensive) I would recommend a commercial refrigeration technician. However, expect a leak to develop again in a few years.
