My Burgundy window is Labor Day to Halloween. So it’s not that I have been neglectful, or gone to the Burgundy dark side, it just seems that Pinot works for me in the early fall, when I still use the grill and I turn to Bordeaux for comfort and long braised stews during winter.
But, yesterday, I could not resist, and enjoyed an excellent Ducru 1996. Now fully mature, with traces of forest floor and mushrooms, but plenty of red fruit, spices and tobacco. Long and layered, a really satisfying bottle of wine.
I don’t drink much Burg ($$$)… many Bourgognes, and I top out at the high end of the Cote de Beaune. In particular, I love lighter Bourgognes in the summer, maybe slightly chilled, but to no less than 65F.
