Aw come on Bill. He’s trying to make wines with Finger Lakes grapes and that’s not an easy task. Established and respected wine critics can’t even find their way up to that region without GPS and a guide dog. Here is a tasting note I wrote after pouring his Gewurztraminer Ice Wine BLIND to a group of unestablished and disrespected Berserkers:
2004 Silver Springs Winery Gewürztraminer Ice Wine- USA, New York, Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake (1/25/2009)
I brought this blind to Episode IV, a New Hope, the fourth annual Peter Lugeresque luncheon. With 81 participants, I went around and poured some to a random collection of 10 people, who shall remain nameless. I got three Wows, one delicious, two excellents, a few comments on high fruit, a question about being a bit short on acid to balance the fruit, and generally very positive responses. A number of people nailed it as an icewine and two suggested Iniskillen, which is pretty close. The owner of the winery has been pushing the idea that Finger Lakes wines deserve 90 point ratings and on this wine, I think he has made it. Not too syrupy, acid is light but spiciness helps with the balance. (90 pts.)
We also poured the Blueberry Bliss at Berserkerfest 2.5 and that is another story. BUT I have had some very respected winemakers repond to my question “wy do you make this crap?” with “I have to make some money off that so that I can afford t make the really good stuff.” My son’s girlfriend and my aunt both thought that his White Merlot was delicious.
