Boardwide Virtual 'Bring Out Your Dead' Tasting

Yep, we all got them. Bottles we think are either too old, or just plain too nasty to drink. Maybe its something you have not had a while and was unimpressed when you did? Maybe its something you have been trying to DUMP on CC? [highfive.gif]
Lets do a collective opening up of them, and post notes HERE.
Should be fun.

I suggest the weekend of May 8th,9th and 10th. Gives you time to rummage.

mao, please sticky me. Thank you much!

As an addendum:
Its can be your ‘bring out your dead to you’ wine as well.
I have a 2005 Keever and a 2001 Blankiet Merlot lined up.

Time to break out some Quilceda Creek!

Amen!!! [rofl.gif]

This is one I can actually do, but my oldest bottle was consumed a couple weeks ago, and it was freakin’ awesome ('71 Inglenook Cask 38 Cabernet Sauvignon). I’ve got some whites that are probably too old by this point, and if not, I’ll go with the ‘dead to me’, a la some syrupy CA pinot noir.

I’ve got a 1987 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour Private Reserve thats probably a goner, and judging by some of the CT notes, a 2001 Cain Five…

I have visions of Monty Python & the Holy Grail running through my head…

i got shit back in the closet deader than some of my trauma patients!

I have a 1971 Doisy Daene in my cellar that must be long gone, but I just never had an opportunity to open it.

This will be a good opportunity to break out my '70 Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese … fill is very high … does anyone think this might still be going strong? [shrug.gif]

Very good chance I’d say. Though I do not know how good of a vintage it is. The fill level sounds promising though that’s not as much of a concern on Germans often.

I went through all my crap the last time Phil Franks came over for lunch.

i certainly hope you are right, cris. out of the 5 bottles that were available, this one had a fill that was considerably higher than the other 4 (maybe an add’l cm, or so). i figure if any producer has a chance of living this long, prum would be one of 'em. this will be the weekend after my last final for the semester, so i will be in the mood to celebrate. A poorly kept 1976 Louie Martini, courtesy of a friend (I guess).

I may need these after opening…

I got an '81 La Tour Blanche, although that might still be really good…

I also got an '87 BV Rutherford, which I’m sure is DOA.

1979 Cave de Tain l’Hermitage , Hermitage (the first of two bottles was quite DOA)

Give it a try. I had one a few weeks ago that was very surprising. If its been stored properly you might be in for a treat.

On a side note I have a 88 Guigal CDR that I can pop.

Hmm I got some crap…Rotlan Torra that Im pretty sure were cooked, Yalumba 99 the signature that has just plain old sucked every time I opened one, and round two with my Chilean Pinot that Glenn likes…cool idea!

One of my wine groups used to do an annual “Old Dead Chardonnays” tasting, with older (usually 10-15 years old) California chards. Out of the 15 or so wines we’d open, there would usually be about 5 that were truly dead and undrinkable, another 10-12 that were basically OTH but still drinkable, if barely, but always at least 2 or 3 wines that were surprisingly good, alive and fully competitive with a mature White Burgundy (at least in longevity, if not style). This should be fun.

Had a '59 La Tache that was about 10 years past its prime. Still has the spice rack nose of a La Tache but the fruit was completely gone. Opened up a 1991 Dominus as well. Still had a little character to it, but the finish was non-existent.
