Bill Koch auctioning ~50% of his cellar

Auctioning 8,000 bottles of his ~18,000 bottle cellar at Christie’s.

Going to be interesting just looking thru lots. Wonder if any Rudy or Rodenstock bottles will be auctioned?

Half. Auctioning the authentic wine.

He has had enough people checking the cellar for authenticity, that I doubt whether any slipped through the cracks. I suspect most of the wines will do extremely well.

Yes I agree, he has probably gone over his cellar with fine toothed comb and sorted out anything suspicious. I guess I suppose whether he would auction any wines that were publicly admitted as being sourced from either of those two, just for curiosity’s sake.

I wonder what a jeroboam of 1921 Petrus by Hardy Rodenstock (RP 100-point wine) would go for at auction?

Why with Christie’s???

complete speculation but, maybe he believes his name trumps any association with a particular house ?

Or maybe got a better deal–either witth this sale or in connection to other sale purchases?

I find it extremely hard to imagine that any Rudy or Rodenstock wine will be in this auction. As he had squabbles with the family and was not active in their businesses, he’s probably only worth a coupla bil. Even though he’s a pauper by family standards, he don’t need the money.
They’re projecting an average selling price of ~$2K/btl.

The encomium in the presentation makes me feel …
I’d better stop RIGHT NOW!

Whoops.

I wonder if this will have an appreciable downward effect on fine wine prices since 8k bottles is probably a significant fraction of overall auction stock for a year

Higher ASP here of course but Acker currently has over 5k lots (so maybe 10-20k bottles?) listed in auction between weekly and their upcoming live

Tangent sorry but does anyone still use the spelling “Ermitage”?

Asking who “still” uses the h-less spelling is backward, to my recollection. 30 years ago, I think the only one who used it was Chave, and only for the Cathelin. Usage seems to be increasing since then rather than decreasing, as Chave now uses is for the standard bottling and as shown above Guigal and Chapoutier have joined the party. There may be others.

Chapoutier has used “Ermitage” for the La Pavillon since at least 1989, which predates Chave’s first vintage of Cuvée Cathelin in 1990, so Chave joined Chapoutier’s party, not the other way around.

That’s what I get for relying on memory - thanks!

Right. 8000 bottles, assuming about 4 bottles per lot, is about 2000 lots (this auction has 1467 lots). This is a bit above average for all auctions, but below the average number of lots for the majors.
