Bilbao, San Sebastian and Girona recommendations please

For November:
One Saturday in Bilbao. Please recommend hotel and restaurant (preferably for lunch).

Sunday in San Sebastian. Please recommend hotel and restaurant (preferably for lunch).

Saturday and Sunday in Girona. Please recommend hotel and restaurants (preferably for lunches). I know Cellar Can Roca is booked a year in advance. I tried Normal, no availability either day.

Please try to recommend places that aren’t booked a year out!

Many thanks!

There are several threads, especially on San Sebastian and Bilbao, that have a ton of info. Though some of the dates of post are back a bit, I just skimmed through and can confirm that most recommendations are still current.

Thank you, I’ll look at the old threads.

30 minutes from Girona, worth the drive especially for the wine list https://www.restaurantvillamas.com/

We stayed at the Casa Cacao in Girona for one night in August 2023 and it was great. Breakfast on the roof is a multi-course event.

We had dinner at Massana, a 1-star restaurant. It was quite good but the dinner was very long and we were very full by the end of it.

From a friend of mine who just moved to Girona in July. Good luck!

Can roca will inevitably find space for you as lots of people cancel as you get closer to your visit. Normal is only open for dinner and should also free up space.

I’ve stayed at nord 1901 hotel in girona but mainly as a cycling hub. It’s recommended and incredibly cheap and perfectly situated in old town but not sure if that’s your style. Girona generally has very inexpensive prices.

Great suggestions and info! Thanks to all.
I am wait-listed for both Can Roca and Normal in Girona. Normal now also serves lunch. We’ll see what pops up and thanks to the board I have alternatives.
Bilbao and San Sebastian are set.

Dan, where are you staying in san sebastian?

Looking forward to hearing about your experiences, we don’t go until April.

Hello Alan,

I’ve booked the NH Collection San Sebastian Aranzazu.

I’ve stayed at NH hotels before, clean, correct, nothing special, but it’s a 5 minute walk from the restaurant Eileen has chosen.

Dan, how was your trip? What was the restaurant? We are headed there next month.

Sorry, can’t help.
We canceled and are going instead later this Spring. This was scheduled during the shutdown and we could not face the likelihood of eternally long security lines and/or delayed or canceled flights.
We’re probably going in May.

What did you settle on for your Spain route?

PS - In San Sebastian, be sure and hit Ganbara for classic Basque cooking with highest level products. Mukka is also good for a sit down meal. La.Cuchara de San Telmo is heavier, but very good plates. Bar Sport is fun and opens early. Antonio Bar has an excellent tortilla, though less traditional than Nestor. A day trip to Saint Jean de Luz can be quite nice. Many other good places, without trying to book the Michelin darlings.

Ganbara is on the list! As are Antonio and Nestor, and a number of your other recs. Will update my thread.
