Biggest Ripoff in Vegas Cusine

If you want another Mina restaurant I’ve heard things about RN74

+1 In fact, Phil Franks and his wife Carrie had dinner here in November. Hopefully he will chime in when he comes out of the foxhole.

This is one of the best new spots in San Francisco. I absolutely love the concept and the food was great. It’s a must while in the city.

Very lively bar as well.

Cheers,

Thanks for the input, we are looking into RN74, might be the place to go on Sunday.

The dinner tonight was absolutely excellent at Cavallo Point Lodge Restaurant. I am a bit buzzed from all the wine, so I will try to be comprehensible.

We had the 8 course tasting menu. It featured paired wines with each course. The food was absolutely excellent and for advanced palates. We have dungeness crab, sturgeon, crab cake bisque. Lamb , grass fed beef, house made sausage as an accent etc., a cheese course and two desert courses (sorbet and a key lime somethingOrAnother) and each paired with a great wine. I cannot recall all the names of the wines at the moment, but we had everything from Monterrey Pinot Noir (07), Italian Montulpacino (08), Italian white (07), Austrian Riesling (05), Champagne (95), Tokaji (number 9?) and a french Savingnon Blanc (Sanceres sp?) 2008.

2 1/2 hour dinner, expertly presented and prepared. Outstanding and not your standard restaurant fare. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those who can travel to the Sausalito area.

I am not sure I mentioned the dinner the night before at Poggio. It was VERY good, but not in the same league as Cavallo Point Lodge. Service was impeccable at Cavallo Point and will satisfy the most demanding diners.

We are having a banquet via their catering group tomorrow evening and I pre-selected their Colorado Rack of lamb. The two chefs work together and the banquet chef was hand picked by the restaurant chef. I have high expectations… I was also told by one of my business associates that for desert, we will be paired with a bottle from his own collection. A magnum of 1977 Taylor Fladgate ! I have a bottle of this sleeping in my cellar and I am very much looking forward to it as I have never personally tried it.

I promised my wife I would go on a diet on Monday…but hey, its only Friday night, I have two more nights to indulge

Glenn,

I think it is now a rock n roll tribute with impersonators…or I could be thinking of a different show, lol. I didn’t go to either, but I try to go to RM at least once or twice a year. I have that on my radar for Feb. Also will hit Prime in Bellagio. Both are known entities and I will not be disappointed as I know what to expect.

Michael,
Thank you for the GPS coordinates  This is a real contender for tomorrow. We are going to discuss on our walk through Sausalito today and I am lobbying my friends to go here as I love most of Mina’s restaurants. So I am eager to try this one. Thank you again for the recommendation!

FOR THE RECORD:

I completely dissed Michael and failed to mention SEABLUE !! There is one in the Borgata in AC and one in MGM in Vegas. Both FANTASTIC. Awesome Seafood! For something different try their Lobster Pot Pie, absolutely excellent and unique.

Serge,

Gabi said Thurs. is fine, providing we eat healthy…other than Season’s 52, not sure what else is healthy in Boca…

Wish you guys were out here with us! You would enjoy all the nice wines and food. We are walking into Sausalito today in order to “walk off” dinner from last night!

Since this is turning into somewhat of a Vegas food thread…

We are are eating (and gambling) our way through Vegas right now. Thursday night’s dinner was at Stripsteak, which is a Michael Mina joint. I had the butter poached Kobe rib cap, and it was simply fantastic. It doesn’t beat Bryan’s Midwest Prime on flavor, but I had to try it out of curiosity once I saw it on the menu. Stripsteak has become my favorite steak house in Vegas. It has a really nice vibe, excellent service, and the steaks are prepared just perfectly.

Lunch yesterday was Sushi Roku at Caesars, which is where we are staying. This was my first visit here, and I think it’s going to be hard to find better sushi in this town.

Last night’s dinner was L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, and might be the best meal I’ve ever had in Vegas. They have a really cool setup where you can sit at the counter overlooking the kitchen, and we had a great view of the action. Everything was simply top notch…these guys definitely earned their Michelin star!

Tonight is LoS, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they have done with it after the renovation.

Have you eaten at Prime in Bellagio? I think it is better than Stripsteak which I have eaten at numerous times. I love the app’s at Stripsteak, but my filet was just a run of the mill great filet but I felt for the money, Prime was a better choice. In December, I had their rack of lamb at Stripsteak and it was very good as well. If you haven’t Prime, I would highly recommend it. Steak is one of my favorite meals and I always search out the great steak places in Vegas. I heard Craft Steak has gone downhill a bit (MGM), not sure as I didn’t go there last week and haven’t been there in about a year.

Try Sushi Samba in Palazzo, it is very good and a bit different than some of the other sushi places in terms of selection and presentation. Might not be the best Sushi, but it is absolutely excellent.

Alan - I’ve been to Prime many times. This is an annual trip for the boys, and we always start it out with a big overblown steakhouse meal on Thursday night. Prime was where we went every year, and while I’ve had some very good meals there, they fell down a bit on our last two visits. Nothing horrible, but with so many other options in town, we decided to move on. I’m sure that we will go back and give them another shot at some point, and I think we will want to try SW at the Wynn as well.

michael mina? very pricey. I’d go to RN74 instead. Much less expensive, more casual and has more character. Of course it’s not really a mina production. the food is all berthold.

Kent, you should of hit me up. Maybe next time.

I have to agree with Alan, Prime over Stripsteak any day. Sushi Roku is by far the best here, and the Lobster potpie at Nobhill blows away Mina’s Sea blue version.

The casino restaurants are pretty much tourist traps for gullible folk who read the Wine Spectator. Avoid them.

Bob, although we share a passion for Lotus of Siam, there are several very good restaurants in Las Vegas.
I have known Alex Stratta for many years as he was a very renown chef here in Scottsdale before he went to Las Vegas. He has two places at the Wynn – Alex at the Wynn (Las Vegas), and Corsa Cucina at the Wynn (Las Vegas, NV). Alex, is a very good restaurant. There are others like L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, already mentioned. The problem with the Casino Restaurant pricing mode in L.V. is that the restaurants have huge rental expenses so that the food and wine lists are very, very expensive.
I have invited Alex this year to my Charity’s Friends of James Beard Dinner in Scottsdale on April 13th if anyone will be in the area. Alex has been a James Beard winner for many years. I encouraged the James Beard Society to consider Saipin Chutima - Owner and Chef of Lotus of Siam in L.V. for the Society and last year she came in second in the voting for the Southwest. She is terrific. The restaurant is extremely reasonable and well worth the cab ride from wherever one is staying in town.

Not finished yet. 3 weeks or so to go. I’ve had several meals at LoS this week. Wine list is paired down until the remodel is complete. Food is still good, though.

Bob, I generally agree with you. I’ll eat off the strip for most of the nights I’m there. I’ll try one or two restaurants on the strip I haven’t tried before. It’s telling that I’ll go back to the same off the strip restaurants but try different ones on the strip.

Jack, I haven’t been to Alex. Maybe this year.

Paul, what off the strip restaurants do you go to?

LoS of course. marche bachus (sp?), rosemary’s, raku. There is a mexican hole in the wall I love but can’t remember the name of it now. I’m usually only there for 4 nights so hard to squeeze in more. Where do you go?

Lindo Michoacan? Good place.

I have heard good things about Alex from people I trust, so if I have a chance I will try it some day. There are also a few steakhouses I enjoy. But I have been burned too many times in casino restaurants. So much so that I don’t consider most of those big name chef places at all. I have eaten at many Emeril places, and haven’t liked them, and Nobu was inedible. Some places chased me out just by looking at the menu or the food being served to people. Prime is an example there. The food was very unappetizing looking. Another is the wine angel place (I forget the name of it).

Bottom line: if have a chance to ty Alex, I may. But in my mind, a casino restaurant would have to prove themsleves to me. I won’t trust any of them anymore sight unseen.
