Best wine store(s) in Atlanta?

Having been spoiled by shopping at Zachy’s and Sherry-Lehmann when we lived in New York, K&L when living in the SF Bay Area, and Esquin when living in Seattle, we’re struggling to find an analogous store in Atlanta. We actually live about an hour and a half east (near Athens), and although we travel into the city somewhat regularly, it’s not often enough to explore random shops on our own, so I’m hoping for recommendations.

We’d love to find someplace that carries German wines in particular, as those are hard to come by around here. I did find a 2016 Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett yesterday at our local bottle shop, where Mr. M was browsing the bourbons - this shop has a decent selection of interesting wines, not just the usual plonk, but it’s not K&L huge. We opened the Donnhoff last night and it was excellent, by the way - going back for more.

Any suggestions?

Here are a couple of threads on this with some recommendations:

Personally, when I lived in Atlanta, I would go to Sherlock’s, they have a decent selection of German Rieslings.

I lived in Athens for grad school. I always thought Five Points Bottle shop had a pretty good and interesting selection. Online it looks like they have a pretty decent German collection (I saw JJ Prum, Donhoff, Clemensbusch, among others).

For small but interesting selection in Athens (in addition to Five Points) - check out the Lark “Wine Space”: https://www.instagram.com/thelarkwinespace/?hl=en

In ATL, among the newer school shops (plenty of natural/bio producers), I lean to Elemental and Hop City, but neither are strong in German wines. (Elemental has very easy online shopping for store pickup)

Aria and Empire State South (restaurants) have had some older German vintages for retail sale lately on their websites, but they may have gone through their inventory.

Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll check out the other threads also. Five Points is actually where I got the Donnhoff - they do carry some German producers, but only one selection from each. Maybe they could do a special order for us if we knew what we wanted, will have to ask - they’re very helpful. They also have a really excellent array of bourbon and scotch, which is why Mr. M likes to go there.

Welcome!

Perrine’s is a very nice store with a nice selection of Rieslings
(Hinton’s) Wine Store on Holcomb bridge is excellent. great back room of stuff and twice a year they run a 20% off by the case sale

Tower has a large selection of German. There’s a bunch of Donnhoff on the shelves right now as well as some Muller, Prum, Selbach-Oster and others. Also 10% off any mixed case or 12% off 5 cases.

Sorry I don’t know Atlanta that well but another recommendation for 5 Points Bottle Shop in Athens. Relatives live walking distance to it and i usually get a case every time I’m in town. Great eclectic selection and decent prices.

Perrines is tough to beat. Also, Cellar 13 in North Buckhead is worth checking out.
