Not taking Oscar Meyer meat slurry tubes here, talking handmade smoked hot dogs. We’ve got a number of butchers around here who makes these, and they don’t resemble anything you could get in a grocery store. I like mine with homemade pickles with onions, mustard (yellow/brown/dijon depending on the day), and either a touch of ketchup or tomatoes. No bun. Is there a red that works with this? Might be easier if I laid off some of the condiments, I know.

Something with good acidity to help with the relish/mustard/tomato stuff.

Or, try a good (real) Lambrusco. It was made for salami and the like.

Remove the toppings and you have lots of options.

As is, I’m at a bit of a loss for a still red wine I’d want to drink with it. Maybe a bigger zinfandel? Sounds delicious though.

This is the right answer.

I’d lean toward a Zin if I was doing wine, but the way they make hot dogs in Chicago (mustard, celery salt, raw onions, radioactive green relish, sport peppers, tomatoes and kraut) you really want beer to wash away the melange of flavors.

That is the only thing to drink with dogs, preferably a nice spicy IPA.

I’d reconsider the red.

Had a Choucroute Garnie of smoked pork chops and bratwurst last week with Alsatian Riesling and Italian Gewurztraminer. Wonderful wines with smoky meats.

Since my wife will always want a red, if we are doing wine, I generally go for a Zin. Fred Scherrer would work.

But I think a white would work best, as mentioned above.

Why don’t you pop a few things and let us know your findings.

I have Zin with chili dogs and pigs in a blanket. Make it a big juicy Zin, or kitchen sink blend like Prisoner or Flux.
