A couple years ago, the best dry white in our market was a sparkling Ribolla Gialla from Slovenia.

And a while back we had an Assyrtiko which was a dynamite hot weather wine.

Also, don’t forget Paolo Saracco Moscato d’Asti.

There’s never a wrong time to serve Paolo Saracco.

It turns that many Poulsards from the Jura tend to drop their Anthocyanins [???] and lose most of their color after a few years in the cellar.

I had read about that phenomenon, and we had one lone bottle of Jacques Puffeney “M” remaining in the stash after all those years, and so, on a hunch, I refrigerated it, and served it outdoors in the heat, and it was the best Rose I ever had in my life.

White: Feinherb riesling
Red: Dirty and Rowdy

Not that we will ever get warm in SF, but a chilled Sancerre or Falanghina before dinner on a hot day is just swell.

I can’t argue with that. Just about opened a bottle today, but decided it could wait for one of the really hot days, and opened a Terlaner Pinot Bianco instead.

Which is one of my second choice wines — whites from NE Italy.

Orange wine

Feel like I’m stating the obvious, but when it’s really hot and humid rose is my top choice. Bandol rose is my favorite but prices have risen a lot on the better versions recently. For values outside of Bandol, I like Gobelsburg’s Ciscercian, Cibonne’s Tentations, among others. My best rose discovery this year is Paltrinieri Lambrusco di Sorbara Radice. Muscadet is another frequent choice in summer.

In warm but not particularly hot weather Beaujolais with a chill is nice, something like Lapierre’s Raisins Gaulois.

Nothing beats Champagne to open a warm evening.
My summer reds are pretty much limited to PN/Burgundy and zin, the latter to go with grilling.

Tempier rose

So many people talk about rosé from Provence, but to me, they’re usually not light enough and lack the acidity I want for a wine to feel truly refreshing. It’s not that I don’t like the wines; they’re just not what I reach for on a hot day. I’ll take rosé from Austria (Gobelsburg is a favorite) or Sancerre every time.

And of course:
Riesling
good Vinho Verde (heck, even the cheap stuff if it’s cold and I’m outside)
Albariño

Light bodied dry whites or maybe rosé for me. Vinho Verde is a great suggestion. I would pretty much ditto Doug’s entire answer, but probably choose a refreshing Rosé d’Anjou for the rosé. I might also opt for a cold lager or Hefeweizen if very warm weather especially if it’s “hot & humid”.

90 degrees F and popped a 2001 aglianico. Yum!
