Need some quick recs for Tex/Mex or true Mex in Houston
I’m in Houston as I write. Try Chuy’s (sp). It’s a chain, but that doesn’t matter. The food is delicious. Tastes nothing like the drek you get up north.
Chuy’s can be fun it is an Austin Original but the one on Westheimer has a good feel and decent food.
El Real Tex-Mex on lower Westheimer is very in and a good space but sadly mediocre since it was opened with great local anticipation by Brian Caswell (our current hot chief) and Robb Walsh a former food critic and Tex-Mex food cookbook author
If downtown at lunch go to the original Irma’s 22 N. Chenevert St., Houston
Something funky with music the Last Concert Café 1403 Nance St., Houston
If near the heights Tony’s Mexican Restaurant 2222 Ella Blvd, Houston
The original Ninfa’s on Navigation is good again and has a great deck
For authentic Mexican - Hugos 1602 Westheimer , Houston is outstanding one of the best restaurants in Houston and a great tequila and wine selection. Again a nice patio.
edit Hugo’s is really a must eat place in Houston
This.
I was in Houston this past weekend and had the Elvis Platter at Chuy’s…very, very filling and satisfying.
Pico’s is one of the fines Mex/Mex restaurants in the USA. Go and get any of the Moles.
take a flight to San Antonio. Los Barrios is great but there are many others. SA is the tex-mex capital.
Ai-yi-yi!
Chuy’s??!?!?!?!?
Really!??!?!?!?
and to have actual Texans, who might actually know something about Tex-Mex, recommending Chuy’s?!?!?!??!
Truly another sign of the impending apocalypse.
Wherever you go, do not go to Chuy’s. It is useless.
My recommendation – not a knowledgeable one, as far as Houston goes – is to hit the original Ninfa’s on Navigation in downtown Houston.
Otherwise, you’re on your own.
I have several suggestions should you come to Austin.
I’d agree here. Wonderful food.
And Chuy’s is okay but by no means representative.
Taqueria Del Sol on the south side is probably the best for barbacoa, an obsession of mine. They make the best I’ve ever tasted.
I’ve had a lot of really bad TexMex in San Antonio.
I’d say Houston and Austin beat San Antonio for overall quality, San Antonio has some good TexMex but it’s less common than Houston or Austin.
While my experience is dated (moved away 10 years ago), this pretty much sums up the problem I had with restaurants in Houston.
If Houston is like many other cities these days, find a taco truck. Seriously.
Chuy’s is to be avoided at all costs. Hugo’s is outstanding.
