El Paso is not a high-end hotel town. To some degree it depends on where you are going in El Paso - East side or West side. The city is divided by the Franklin mountains. There is one highway, Interstate 10 and you really don’t want to be staying on the east side if you need to be on the west side. There are a few hotels in downtown El Paso if that is where you need to be. There is one highway, Interstate 10 and you really don’t want to be staying on the east side if you need to be on the west side. Almost everything you will find in El Paso are big name brands. If you need to stay downtown, the Stanton House is nice and its restaurant Taft Diaz is very good. Of course, Mexican food is the thing in El Paso.
PM or send me an email and let me know where you need to be and what kind of restaurants you prefer. Maybe I can provide more targeted recommendations.
I agree with Mark. If you are staying downtown and especially if you are a Marriott regular, Hotel Paso Del Norte is another nice hotel. The Doubletree is also downtown. Pot au Feu and Cafe Central are downtown restaurants. Cattleman’s steakhouse is very good but it is a 36 mile drive east from downtown. Pot au Feu is consistently good. Cafe Central is one of those up and down restaurants. Sometimes great. Other times, not so great. I haven’t been there since Covid. But if you are not staying downtown, you probably don’t want to eat downtown. Parking can be difficult to find and it can be expensive. And the homeless population can be aggressive.
On the west side, the Hoppy Monk pub is as the name suggests a pub but a very good one with a lot of drink choices and a somewhat limited but fun menu. The only place in town where you can get rabbit tacos. If you want to go east, On The Grill is a favorite stop for us but they close at 7pm. Also on the east side but not too far out is Thirty 5ive Tavern & Grill. It is a reasonably price steak and seafood restaurant.
I could go on but where you are staying makes a difference. PM me with where you will be staying maybe I can help a little more.
Hoppy Monk is a great place, don’t know how I forgot, well i do, its been a few years since I’ve been there
Great beer selection if that is what you’re after
My party doesn’t have any particular plans, they are just meeting cousins visiting legally from Mexico.
The two best hotels in ELP, hands down, are The Plaza and Stanton House, both downtown. Hotel Paso del Norte, also downtown, is pretty good but the first two compete with better hotels elsewhere (despite my buddy Michael’s comment above).
As for grub, the recommendations above are good and I’ll second Taft-Diaz and add Anson 11 and Ambar. All of these are downtown.
Please feel free to PM me for any further recommendations and I’d love to meet up with any Berserkers any time you’re in my ‘hood, provided I’m not on call.
There you are. Take it from the local. Jeremy is up-to-date. Lucky for me, I have family to stay with when we are in El Paso and Jeremy and his lovely wife to share wine with.
