Best Doughnuts In NYC?

Only had a few so can’t really speculate. I do like this quote from Tina Fey though: “The best doughnut? That’s Peter Pan doughnuts in Brooklyn…It’s a white-cream-filled powdered doughnut. And I really believe, when I first tried it, if I had a penis, I would put it in this doughnut. I finally understand what you guys are thinking about and what motivates you guys.” H/T Eater btw.

Any been to Peter Pan?

Other thoughts on NYC doughnuts?

Alls I can say is that working at DD as a teen and the Krispy Kreme experience has taught me that fresher is better. Most donuts I see in and around Manhattan seem to be of the outsourced, industrial bakery variety.

Bomboloni on Columbus Ave & 68th is the new kid in town getting rave reviews.

I’m curious about The Doughnut Plant in the Lower East Side. Want to try it some day.

I’ve been to the Doughnut plant once, my neighbor and I made the trek because he talked me into it. We waited until the doughnuts came out fresh. They were amazing to say the least, best I’ve ever had, not that I’m much of an afficianado. I would recommend trying them.

The Doughnut Plant is one of the few I’ve had. Maybe I went on an off day.

No you didn’t. When they first opened, everyone went there because they made yeast donuts… this means chewy. So if you like this kind of donut John, give them a try. They do produce some unusual flavors. While you’re all the way downtown, walk a few doors away and pick up a Kossar bialy. http://www.kossarsbialys.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Most New Yorkers would argue that this is a better choice than the Doughnut Plant.

FYI, you can buy Doughnut Plant donuts downstairs in Grand Central **. There’s a freestanding deli type of a place selling a limited variety.

** Since you’re in Grand Central, get a piece of cheesecake at Juniors instead! [grin.gif]

John, despite what I assume to be your extensive donut background, I recommend you read Donuts: An American Passion, by John T. Edge, before proceeding with your quest.

FWIW, the two places in New York he mentions are Doughnut Plant, and Dos Caminos SoHo, 475 West Broadway (churros).

In the past year, Tim Hortons has opened in various locations. They make a cake donut that seems to be all the rage on the west coast. In my opinion, Tim Hortons is better than Dunkin Donuts. Much more important the donuts in NYC is cupcakes. Cupcake stores are popping up everywhere, just like pizza places and Starbucks.
Sorry to be off topic.

Just look for a donut shop with lots of cop cars in front. Either the donuts are good or they just got robbed!

This is a great question.

I grew up along the Jersey shore…where the most loved donuts were not batter types…but cake types. Super hot, cinnamon and sugar donut shaped cakes that sorta fell apart as you ate them. Are there any places like that in NYC?

Cops go to Charbucks these days. They drink lattes and eat scones.

Street cupcakes?

$107,000 for the vendor permit!!! Better be selling a whole mess of cupcakes.

The latest Cook’s Illustrated panned the cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery, Crumbs, and Kyotofu.

Haven’t had Kyotofu, but the have had the other two, and they are vastly overrated, IMHO (especially Crumbs)

Funny; IMO Crumbs is much better than Magnolia. Magnolia’s frosting is basically Crisco with coloring added…disgusting. It’s become a caricature of itself and the joke is only tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of Sex & The City characters go there.

I did like the various doughnuts at Bouchon Bakery FWIW, though they aren’t obviously not a “doughnut place.”

That is exactly how you get the best stuff in NYC. Delivery! [gen_fro.gif]
