And back when 20% cash back at RMN was not a rare occurrence!

I placed some 2022 Bdx futures orders with wdc, some using RMN, some using CapOne. RMN honored all the cash back after I waited 45 days and submitted a claim. Today, the first of my CapOne purchases (with 18% offer) hit 45 days so I submitted it and was denied on the basis that “another reward program was credited with this purchase”, which I’m confident can’t be true. I responded to their e-mail and we’ll see where it goes.

FYI…

Yeah I had a bunch of CapOne orders with no issue from late 2022 through April 2023. Then a couple of orders in May (18% rewards) never got credited, followed by several June orders (including some futures orders). After 30 days I reached out about the May orders and they said it’s 30-60 days so check back after 60. I just did that recently and they rebuffed me again saying it’s 90 days now. Given that the rewards are not even showing as pending, I feel like this is going to be an uphill battle. Probably done using CapOne if not resolved painlessly, even if the rewards go back up to attractive levels.

This was a moving target.

First it was “this purchase tracked to a different reward program” with “you may have used a coupon code from another site” as the explanation for why that may have happened. I responded that as shown on the confirmation I didn’t use any coupon code. (This was an “ends in 7” futures purchase, so we here know that obviously I did not use any coupon code from their website or otherwise). She responded by pointing out the “stewardship savings” line on my confirmation. I explained what stewardship is, and that it is not a coupon and does not involve a code. She came back with the two final nails in the coffin -

  • No rewards on purchase or redemption of gift cards
  • Your account shows that you have received the maximum number of manual adjustments

So, to review -

A) We knew from the beginning that their T&C said “no rewards when redeeming gift cards”, which was one of the reasons I was a late adopter of CapOne as compared to RMN or Rakuten (I almost always use gift cards from Raise on wdc purchases). But we also knew from others’ experiences posted here that purchases tracked just fine even when using gift cards, and I had thereafter confirmed this through personal experience. But all that won’t prevent them from citing the gift card rule to deny a purchase that didn’t track automatically when they run out of other excuses.

B) What is new, AFAIK, is this “maximum number of manual adjustments.” I have probably had somewhere like 3-5 purchases using CapOne where I had to e-mail them to fix the issue, no more than that. So this previously undisclosed max is a pretty low number. Be warned. This is obviously more of an issue with futures purchases than others as we know those won’t track and will require an e-mail.

As a result of this, I may still use CapOne in the future if they have a really good offer and the purchase is for something that will ship right away, but I will no longer be using them for wdc purchases of futures or anything not shipping for a long time - too likely the reward will end up being zero. YMMV but that’s now my approach.

Thanks for the update Dave!

I could swear one of the travel blogs had mentioned something about CapOne portal suddenly being balky. My guess it’s something as simple as that they have realized how much they were bleeding out, and burned through all their marketing/promotional assumptions, and thus are now denying everything under the sun. This is unfortunately the long dishonorable history of shopping portal lifecycles - unsustainable benefits, clawbacks/denials, and even sometimes outright defaults on earned rewards.

Suggest extracting whatever one has earned from them.

Maybe. In fairness, I did make an Ace Hardware purchase via CapOne a few days after this wdc purchase and it tracked just fine. Of course, for the dollars in question I’d gladly give up my Ace cash back for my '22 futures cash back.

Yeah, it went from 30% to 18%, then after a long hold there down to 11% and now sitting at 8%. Very few stores on my list have anything decent anymore and some have dropped as low as 0.5%. At that point, just end the cash back promo.

It is still nice to get 25% back with Chewy though.

Thanks for the info Dave and Toby. I stopped keeping track of my capone orders because they seemed so reliable, I guess I should keep a more watchful eye.

I have another week until my 45 days are up, hopefully it works out. Would love to be getting 30% discount on LCHB, Montrose, etc

Yep. I only had 18 not 30, but that was the dream.

Was.

Got excited when I saw that RMN was doing a big multi-retailer 20% cash back “back to school” promotion, but I checked and inexplicably wdc is not one of the participating merchants. I guess members of the Oxbridge wine tasting teams preparing to return to campus are just out of luck.

For those with the Total Wine app, check the targeted coupons. In mine, they placed a $10 off $40 coupon, which remarkably appears to work on any wine that is not marked with .97. It is very rare in my experience for them to discount anything that is not Winery Direct. I tested it (by putting things in a cart and looking at subtotal) on a few nationally distributed wines, and it seemed to work in app.

I had also gotten an in person coupon upon check out last month which appeared similar but was 20% off uncapped, and again, appeared to cover even non Winery Direct wines. I had ignored it, assuming they would pull a bait & switch upon attempted use, but maybe that is also real. It has a very long unique 1 time code for online use, so I suspect that testing it (in a cart) would blow up the code.

Prices always seem high at the TW near me, but for Rioja tends to be one section where their selection and markups are consumer friendly. A couple of Riscal Reservas might be good uses for those discounts.

I just realized they had the same offer a couple years ago…

Nice! Works on '21 Geyserville listed at $47.99. Already have that but another bottle at $38 isn’t bad. Too bad '21 LS won’t be out before the coupon expires in a couple of weeks.

Following your Rioja suggestion, I also see 2010 Bosconia listed at $42.49. Of course I already have that one too. Will have to poke around a bit.

For Cap One, anyone compared offers from the browser extension vs the app? Keep getting marketing emails to unlock additional savings using the extension.
