Normally I avoid Zachys, on account of their excessively high shipping costs (e.g., $55/case to Maryland). But I also noticed (though it’s not advertised on their website) that 2016 Brunellos (a stellar vintage) are currently sold with free ground shipping anywhere in the US. (i called, and they told me no other wines currently come with free ground shipping.)

They have 42 different 2016 Brunellos in stock. One excellent deal this makes possible: Talenti Brunello 2016 (97, Kerin O’Keefe) x 8 + Mastrojanni Brunello 2016 (95, Kerin O’Keefe) x 1 = $503 - $100 - 5 = $398, about $44/bottle (before tax).

I’m afraid I haven’t opened any of the 2016 Brunellos I’ve acquired this year, which are resting comfortably in my cellar. Hell, I’ve barely tasted the 2010s, and have yet to start drinking the 2012s, 2013s, and 2015s. But I do trust the judgment of Kerin O’Keefe: “Focused and loaded with finesse, this opens with enticing aromas of menthol, graphite, rose and forest floor. Full bodied and delicious, the linear, energized palate features ripe Marasca cherry, licorice, mint and vanilla before a coffee-bean finish. Firm, polished tannins and fresh acidity provide support. Drink 2024–2036. Editors’ Choice.” For what it’s worth, I don’t plan to buy any more Brunello after the 2016 vintage…

Hadn’t read that review. Previous Talenti had me sold enough to grab my first 6, but Larner and Guido and now O’Keefe reviews are making me think I should buy more.

I will buy a handful of the 2016 riservas when they release, but other than that I won’t likely be buying much Brunello in the coming years either.
