Bedrock Spring 2024 Release

Of course- that doesn’t stop the sticker shock from people who usually see $40-70 for the SVDs from Bedrock (Oakville aside)

For my palate, Napa is just too hot for cab franc. Keep in mind, I think everything not up high should be torn up and replated with Mourvèdre  preferably by @PeterB personally. So imagine not a useful pov for most.

But, if you like this sort of thing (site and price point), seems like worth it given the quality of the winemakers.

you know I love me some Cali Mourvedre

That '16 Andremily Mourvèdre was so lovely.

I only buy wines at 200 or higher that are special (which has been rare), so I have to grab a couple of these-- if I am offered an allocation… . , considering the pedigree of this site, and of course if Morgan and Chris are making it , I have to do it. I only had the Desert east block once and it was delicious . I bet Morgan will do this cab franc right and with his own cool spin on it. The question will be how long you wait to open one .

Plus, if I am going to purchase a bottle at 200, I feel better giving it to an operation run by a couple cool dudes

Brix around 24 is a really auspicious starting point–that may not be achievable in many vintages. But following from a wet winter to a very temperate growing season and late cool harvest sets up as a superb vintage for Cab Franc.

This isn’t a price point for me, but I have no ill will toward Bedrock for pricing based on their COG, which will be quite substantial based on the fruit source. Napa as a whole is due for a price correction, though this isn’t going to be the tipping point. Nonetheless, it says something that this source opened up in the first place.

Personally, I’d like to see some Aglianico and Nerello Mascalese tried out in Napa. Napa’s latitude, climate and (in some places) volcanic soils have much more in common with southern Italy than Bordeaux. Of course, this would be economic suicide for any grower.

To your point - if Detert is charging 225, I am not sure how Bedrock can go a lot lower? Traditionally Detert sold their fruit to Mondavi - who else are they selling to? Hard to imagine Detert saying we will sell you some of this fruit below market so you can make a wine that is cheaper than what we sell with the same fruit.

I wonder if we don’t participate if we lose our position for future releases?

A good chunk of the speculation here is addressed in the latest Bedrock Wine Conversations podcast: Bedrock Wine Conversations: 060 - 2023 Bedrock Detert Vineyard Release & an Interview with Tom Garrett, Winemaker & Owner of Detert Family Wines

Seems very unlikely. The save the date email specifically noted that allocations will be small and the offer is first-come, first-served.

I certainly didn’t mean to throw anyone under the bus - I was just thinking through the language used and possible scenarios. I think they easily could have charged the same as Detert ($225) regardless of how much they paid for the fruit and whatever their margins are. Same fruit same price.

I have been trying to cut back most/all of my purchases, especially at this price point. But, I love Detert, I love their East Block, and I love Bedrock. Pretty compelling combination. I plan to pick up my allocation if I can log on in time.

Ok, but will there be free shipping? :upside_down_face:

Tried to pry loose what 23s might still be for sale in advance, they said stay tuned for the release.

I imagine if you ship these bottles with a regular Bedrock order the shipping will get covered.

Yes, the podcast said that one option for this release will be to combine your order with your order from the next regular release, for shipping purposes.

So… no.

Now I am tempted…

Order in! All the prior wines I wanted a little more of were available too, so that was nice. Love and appreciate the option to combine shipping with Fall order.

I grabbed 2 of the Detert, took the ‘add to later order’ option.

Order in…

I was shocked to see an allocation of six on the Detert. Grabbed a pair and a couple more Oakville Farmhouse.
