We’re planning a trip to Beaujolais in 2023. Any suggestions as to Domaines to visit that you have accessed in the recent past? Did you call or write the Domaine in advance? Any overnight stays? Restaurant recs? It’ll be on our way from Nice. The next leg will be to Beaune and then Chablis. Thanks in advance.
No visit suggestions, though I will flag that Macon is literally the other side of the hill from Julienas, so might also interest
In Julienas itself, le coq et la rose was very enjoyable with good food & wine list, and the most impressively attentive front of house I can recall
There are many. But Marcel Lapierre is a nice one to visit. Mee Godard is easy to book as well.
If you have time pass by restaurant Ema, it’s one of the best tables in the region and they have an amazing wine list at reasonable prices.
Following with interest
Thivin is absolutely worth a stop and you can schedule on their website.
I stayed at the Chateau de Briante in Saint-Lager and it was very nice–available on Booking.com. We were there amid a crippling heat wave–triple digits hot–so was grateful for the AC!
Had dinner at the nearby L’Ecume Gourmand and it was excellent with a great wine list.
I only had 24 hours or so so didn’t see as much as I wish I had–definitely awkwardly traipsed around more than one allegedly “open” property hoping for signs of life and finding none.
Chateau Pizay is not on anyone’s list of “cool” producers (I don’t think) but they have a big facility with “serve yourself” automatic dispensers and taste-at-your-leisure setups. One of the most corporate places you’ll find and not the best wines (but not bad!) but informative and I personally enjoy tasting a range and spitting.
Thank you, Ian. Good to know what is also nearby.
Pete, Lapierre is on my must visit list, for sure.
Dave, excellent. I have been drinking Kermit Lynch’s import of Thivin for years. We also get it while in Nice FR. Great idea and thank you for the easy booking. It is entirely possible we will stay and eat at your two suggestions. You’ve made a difference and we appreciate it. If you are in Nice when we are there. Look us up. I’ve got a bottle or two we can share.
I didn’t see a response to the question of whether it was important to book Beaujolais domain visits. Any advice? Is booking necessary?
It’s always recommended to make appointments in advance to ensure people are able to receive you! You’ll generally also get a better visit all around.
Thivin and Lapierre were very nice visits when I was there last year. They were quite responsive to email appointments, even though they were initiated by our local importer.
If you’d like to visit Foillard, I hope you speak French!
Thanks!
