So, a friend brought this over last week to share with me. As soon as I saw “corn whisky” on the label, I assumed I was not going to like it; and that’s where I was wrong! I loved this stuff. Sure, it has a very strong campfire smoke aspect to it — I assume many folks would find this overwhelming — but I enjoyed it. Perhaps being a fan of Islay malts helps one enjoy the heavy smokiness of this Balcones. Although the smokiness here is definitely that — smoky — and not peaty, I reckon many fans of Islay malts would like this nonetheless; I can also see fans of Rye whiskey liking this, too. I plan on trying to find this stuff when I get back to CA.
I’ve been experimenting with Corn Whiskey lately. I’ve had the Hirsch and the Heaven Hill’s Mellow Corn (killer QPR!). Very interesting profile that takes some getting used to, but it grows on you! I will have to try this Balcones.
Balcones is blue corn, they’re a distiller to watch as they get some aged stock.
