As a WBer amd Jeopardy fan, I would have expected to be able to correctly answer a question about an AVA as the final Jeopardy clue. And yet, I had no idea. Would you have known this? And, if so, did you know the AVA or just recognized the town mentioned?
I know the AVA they asked about but overthought the answer.
I knew the town but not the AVA
I know neither the town nor the AVA and would have guessed Long Island.
I immediately looked up the AVA. I don’t see how it can cover “multiple” states as the clue indicated. Per Wikipedia, it only covers Martha’s Vineyard and Chappaquiddick Island (on eastern edge of MV).
Interesting story about how Heitz disputed the naming of Martha’s Vineyard as an AVA.
Was was thinking Finger Lakes.

Now that I see that map and looked again at the AVA description, Martha’s Vineyard is a sub-region of the Southeastern New England AVA. Who knew?
So the larger AVA does cover three states.
Can anything good come from Providence? – John 1:46
Lived in MA all my life so I know where Chilmark is.
Two of the three contestants answered correctly. I have to believe that is because they knew the town.
The question also wasn’t about the AVA. If it was, I doubt any of them would have gotten it.
Exactly. They wanted the name of the island, which made it easier. I guessed it right only because of the “island” part of the clue, even though I’d never heard of Chilmark.
Typical Jeopardy where you have to read the question very carefully and / or ignore half the question to zero in on the heart of the matter.
“What eastern US island contains the town of Chilmark” is a lot simpler.
That was fun. I missed it but still fun. Thanks for sharing OP!
Right
The other half helps trip someone up who thinks of wine on LI.
Ironically, Chilmark is a dry town. It’s one of my most favorite things about parts of MV, and most annoying sometimes! You can BYOB liquor (wine or beer) and they have all the ingredients for cocktails. Summers there - wicked awesome.
