Automne...Calling Gerhard P.

I love (LOVE) Automne.

I love the food.

I love the colors.

I love the weather.

What music (!) and wine make this a good (or bad) season for you?

Vivaldi and Barolo for me.

I passed the weekend making rillettes de lapin. 24 hours of curing. 12 hours of cooking. A lifetime of enjoyment!

Rinaldi Langhe 2010 is great (maybe a bit reticent). It is so profound and inviting. Vivaldi’s 4 seasons is the perfect pairing. For me.

Gerhard, what else can I listen to this season?

I love Fall…

Paul,
you mean the FALL in general - or in a specific region?

With music it´s kind of similar as with wine:
for me it´s most important that one likes the music (or the wine) … only then (and on 2nd place) a specific pairing can be a better, ideal … or not so good - match.

In other words:
even the (theoretically) ideal combination (of music - or of wine) with a season or a food doesn´t give me any pleasure if I don´t like the music (or the wine) seperately at all.

Back to your question: (Vivaldis 4 seasons should fit to all 4 seasons, not only to fall alone … [wow.gif] )

What about Schubert:
try String Quintet -Major D.956 (especially the 2nd movement)
or Piano Trio Eb-Major D. 929 …
or Sonata for Arpeggione a-minor D.821

or what about Mozart:
Piano Quartet g-minor KV 478

or Beethoven:
Piano Sonata op.28 D-Major

Wines:
Sorry, I´m francophil and no fan of Italian wines … IF at all I would like to drink either an old Barolo (1970 or 71) or Bricco dell´ Uccellone 1989 or 1990 …

But I would very much prefer something French - and mature.

In 3 weeks I´m doing a tasting of mature wines from Southern France and Rhone, and from this list I would always love to have

  • Vacqueyras Ch. des Tours 1995
  • Tempier La Migoua 1989
  • L´Aigueliere Cote Doree 1998
  • Syrah Leone - Peyre-Rose 1992
  • Copa Santa - Pierre Clavel 1995
  • Prieur´St.Jean de Bebian 1995
  • Trevellanon 1989

or Bonneau CdP Marie Beurrier 1992 - or even CdP 1991 (!)
[cheers.gif]

… not talking about any mature Pegau or Rayas … flirtysmile

Rabbit Rillettes. Never had it. That sounds absolutely fabulous.

Enjoy the Fall in Switzerland.

I love this time of year in the Southern US. It is a time of color change for us and beauty along
the Appalachian chain. Finally some cooler weather after scorching hot summer.

For me a time to dig into Southern Rhone and Northern Rhone treasures with some of the bounty of the season.

Music would have to be something cool and satisfying. I like the original Miles Davis “Birth of the Cool” album to put me in the mood.
Classical music is nice but I love jazz in the fall.

So what about “Scetches of Spain” ? [whistle.gif]

I like that one too!

Thanks for the feedback. And thanks for the Miles Davis reminder! I love Gerhard’s recommendations but the Miles Davis segue is a nice surprise (and a great direction).

FWIW Mozart Piano Quartet g-minor KV 478 playing as I write this quick note.

Chateauneuf de Beaucastel 2004 in the glass.

And Rabbit “butter” on the plate!

Don, the rillettes de lapin is from Keller’s Bouchon book. 24 hours of curing, 10 hours of cooking (I elected to do sous vide with goose fat) and then topped off with a sort of confiture of prunes. No sugar added though so the sauce has a nice acidic cut which keeps the rillettes light on its feet (relatively speaking). Sensational result.

The Beaucastel is very much an expression of Mourvèrde. With a tinge of brett.

And back to the original question…fall in general. I love fall. I love the feeling, the crisp and court wind, the smells, the colors, the calm, the food, the harvest, the feeling between people at this time of year. It’s a very sincere time of year. And it has long been my favorite. I’m ok for spring but my heart belongs to fall.

As for Italian vs French…my Italian selection is limited to producers such as Rinaldi. The rest is French (and a few Swiss + Germans in between to keep things interesting). After my recent trip to Austria I know realize I need to diversify and add a fourth dimension.

As for Piano Quartet g-minor KV 478, it has the quintessential gravitas with a well preserved finesse which fits perfectly to Autumn (L’Automne, the more French I learn the more my spelling in English devolves). I think Ludwig or Miles is up next!

Thank you for contributing and providing some additional ideas for wines + music which marry well with the season.

Paul,

you once have to visit Southern Styria in fall (the region is called the Styrian Toscana):
coloured vine leaves, roasted chestnuts, fresh fermenting young wine (Sturm) and rustic snacks (Brettlhausn) … simply gorgeous.

I´m less than an hour away …

Autumn for me is Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds’ ‘No More Shall We Part’, a roasted game bird and aged red Burgundy.
