The eternal reminder that maintaining transparency to site is our end-game. Ultimately, transparency is about revealing all of the nuance and detail a given site has to offer, and if that site is extraordinary, an extraordinary wine is the result. The Old Corral and Homestead blocks that go into this wine were planted in 2006 & 2007 to ‘Alban Powerblock’ selection vines. The dramatic, steeply terraced rows these vines are planted only 3 feet apart and are similar to extreme vineyards in the world’s top Syrah regions in the Northern Rhone Valley. These hand farmed vineyards force you to invest a lot for little (grapes) in return. But what you do at harvest proves that it is worth what it takes.
Sixty-Two Terraces Syrah
94 points- Antonio Galloni, Vinous & Jeb Dunnuck.
From our CCOF Certified Estate Vineyard. This vineyard block follows a Ridgeline with a South West aspect from just above the winery, all of the way to the top of the main ridge (dividing watersheds) in a series of Sixty Two Terraces. Seven terraces are planted to Viognier (East Terraces Viognier), but the remainder go into Sixty Two Terraces Syrah. Rattlesnake Rock and Sixty Two Terraces planting are both entirely Alban Field Selections, but while Rattlesnake Rock’s Cote Rotie field selection is classically floral with violet and lavender, Sixty Two Terraces are planted to Baby Block and Power Block selections. These very different field selections even look different in the vineyard, with smaller, more compact clusters than the long loose clusters in Rattlesnake Rock. The resulting wine tends to be more savory and spicy and is one of the more intense Syrahs we produce.
