aston mailer, in or not?

aston pinot mailer just hit

Free shipping for a case AT $60 PER…

OUT

I am likely out. if they were made with suitcase clones, I will reconsider [wink.gif]

You are clearly not a baller. neener

Just kidding. Not nearly high enough quality to justify the tariff.

Just go for the 1/2 at $65 per plus shipping. The shipping cost will probably make you consider going for the whole case. [mouth-drop.gif]

Anyone taste these? Seems pretty pricey for a Cali pinot these days, but just for fun, what other US pinot would you rather have at this price point?

It will probably be an easy sell out with the Schrader/TRB combo.

Chris

For a bit less, I would go with Radio-Coteau. I am a big fan of their Pinot’s.

I don’t believe comparing other US pinots in the same price range is even relevant. There aren’t very many in the first place. Would I rather have a library Calera or a new Aston? Easy choice.

I would just look at the Sonoma Coast. I don’t think it’s any better than a lot of SC bottlings in the $30-50 range. A lot. Pick a name in that range, there’s a good chance it’s of equivalent or better quality. Aston is way overpriced. And I’m not very happy with Schrader going from $95 to $150 in two vintages, either. But that’s a different thread.

I’m headed up the hill to meet with Thomas this afternoon. Will see if there is any around to try.

Steve - I agree with your point, but I was looking to see if someone was willing to pay that kind of coin, what other choices are out there in that range that really light your fire. I don’t own much US pinot over the $50 price point (except a decent amount of non SVD KB’s) because there is so much good juice below that.

William - I’m anxious to read your impressions of ALL the TRB wines you get through! He’s involved in so many, so I doubt you’ll get anywhere close to tasting them all.

Thanks!

Chris

I just got the mailer today - has anyone tasted these pinots? what can you tell me? a blind purchase at $65 per bottle doesn’t excite me

i have read that TRB is the winemaker.

Do I have to give a moderator tips on how to use the site? [tease.gif]

Oucher! [wink.gif]

My friend Ben has a search function poem that would be perfect right about now. [swoon.gif]

That’s so weird…i looked and didn’t see anything - oh well

So I’m new to the whole mailing list game. I signed up for the Schrader waiting list and apparently got offered these Aston Estate Pinots. Do I need to buy some to keep my place in line for Schrader? Alternatively, would buying Aston increase my chances of getting an allocation of Schrader soon-ish? Thanks for any insight.

The consensus seems to be that, Schrader list issues aside, these wines aren’t worth $60-65, but if anyone would like to convince me otherwise, I’m all ears.

This has no impact on getting the cab offer.

Since the cab offer went from 10 @ $95 to 5 @ $125 to 3 @ $150 (2005-2007 vintages), the cab list offer might be 2 @ $175 for the '08s (especially since output was down in '08 vis-a-vis 2007). One @ $200 for 2009.

This is true. I remember hearing that prices would remain the same this year around the time they were doing those huge auctions. I sure hope they do, although I don’t know if I will be able to afford it anyway this year…

pass for me as just dropping $ on RM today

Word on the street is they had to declassify all their estate fruit in 08 due to smoke taint. Obviously they wont be able to produce an 08 estate pinot so I guess they are buying fruit in 08?
