Asteroid Wines (the apocalypse)?

What are the “asteroid wines”?
(wines from your cellar that you’d immediately plan on opening on the news that a giant asteroid had Earth’s name on it) hitsfan

Mine might be a 1993 Château Pajzos Tokaji Esszencia that I uncovered recently moving bottles. I’ve had a few bottles in the cellar but I’ve never tried one.

And I’d probably raid all of the 2001 birth year wines I’ve been saving for Dario. The Lafite might in in an odd place, but we’d “choke” it down.

Hm. Why not open them all?

And then, predictably, the asteroid wouldn’t hit, and you’d spend the rest of your life feeling like such an idiot.

So, we’re talking Permian-Triassic extinction event big asteroid?

Ok, then!

I’d go for the older St. Éstephes (Calon Segur and Cos d’Estournel) and the Pahlmeyer Red Blend (Cab?), and the ’98 Musar. And, when I say older I mean “not nearly old enough” so there’d be tears in my eyes but a smile on my face.

St. Éstephe first, then ease into the others.

1985 Ch. La Conseillante
1989 Haut Brion
1983 Ch. D’Yquem

and possibly a long vertical of Chave.

BTW, Bay Area WBers should have a designated emergency gathering place for such an occasion. It just makes good sense. Safety first.

What are the few wines at the top? The ones that you’d want make sure to enjoy before dying.

The real question is could I get to Favre’s cellar before it hits…

1875 Barbeito Boal Madeira
2007 Saxum James Berry Vineyard Magnum
1998 Soldera
1975 Cheval Blanc
1997 Jaboulet La Chapelle (but only if it happens in 2022 or later. I am saving that until it is 25 years out)

I would also hope to have a friend with some DRC who wanted to share the above, because I would like to taste it before I die and every time I try to buy a bottle at auction, some other idiot overbids.

Every bottle of my old, old Madeira. Then if the asteroid didn’t hit, I could recork and not be any worse for wear. neener
