Armand Rousseau 2005 Lavaux St Jacques, Seepage

I Recently Purchased
2005 Armand Rousseau Lavaux St Jacques,

By the time the bottle arrived i check on the condition snd found stain on the label

I suspect it was cause by cork seepage but after checking the ullage level it seems on the perfect level and i do colour checks using flashlights that seems to be just okay.

Any thoughts on what to do?
Do i need to open it immediately or can i hold the bottle?
As this is my first time dealing with seepage.

send it back for a refund.

and welcome to WB!

The stain could have been cause by a leak or spill from another bottle.

Thanks and hello everyone,

Just discover WB and it’s a good place for discussion

That might be the cause.

The cork looks good from the pictures I’m seeing?

Looks like something else spilled in it. That’s not typical seepage staining.

Where did you buy it? Unless you got it from in bond storage or you can trace the provenance, I would say you’ve already strapped on storage risk and that spill doesn’t change that risk even incrementally. Doesn’t look like seepage.

Let’s say its from another bottle, any suggestions on how the bottle will perform? Will it automatically turn bad?

I purchased the bottle from a merchant which is quite reputable in my community.

The merchant is in singapore and since i live in Indonesia, the bottle was shipped by air.

Probably this particular bottle provenance is questionable .
I had few other rousseaus and roumiers shipped at the same time they’re doing just fine

A bit of a roll of the dice but if you have faith in the seller I wouldn’t let that label change my view. I’d open it and if it seems off get in touch with the retailer and see what they say.

I’m not sure something spilling on a label is going to affect the wine inside the bottle?

Or better yet reach out with your concern beforehand and see if they will make you whole if it is off. If not, then at least you know the risk you’re taking and can send it back if you aren’t comfortable.

When did you plan on drinking the wine? Near term or otherwise?

To my eye, that looks like an acceptable bottle and the stained label should have nothing to do with how the wine tastes. Personally I would drink it but you’ll be better off if you let the retailer know the condition in advance of opening.

Thanks my friend, will definitely open it soon.

Initially i suspect the stain came from a leaked cork, but the stain could be cause by either a bad provenance or leak from other bottles during shipment.

I don’t have any specific time at the beginning, but after looking at the label conditions and all the probability in my mind i would consider opening it in a month or two

No, I don’t think that is leaked wine. It just looks like a label that has gotten damp and discolored. Which again could be a sign that the wine has been stored well and will show correctly

I like the idea of contacting the seller first.

I’m one of those freaks who prefers to let older wines sit at least a few weeks before opening them anyway.

Welcome to the board!

that bottle is fine. Don’t open for a few weeks. Needs to settle down

Agree, as long as there’s no cork protrusion I would just chalk it up as bin staining.
