A client asked me…

Pieroth Platinum Cuvee Schaumwein with a bottle tag of F 1068.

I have had it for many years and want to know what its worth and whether or not it is still flavorful. It hasn’t been stored in a cellar but in a cool, dark cabinet.

How can I get information about this wine? I tried wine selector on-line and tried to locate the import company which was out of Franklin Park, Ill ; the wine was actually bottled in West Germany, but with no luck. Do you have any suggestions?

Peiroth is a group of wine ‘consultants’ who sell private labeled crap that no one has ever heard of, usually in person to person sales, ie. they have a person host a tasting for their friends, and put the hard sell on.

Isn’t Schaumwein cheap sekt? And the notorious Pieroth? I’d guess this is the equivalent of Andre “Champagne”

I went to one of these home tastings many years ago when I didn’t know a whole lot about wine, but even then I could tell that the wines they were pushing were way overpriced for what they were. And as you note, the hard sell aspect made the whole thing very unpleasant.

my parents just bought some horridly overpriced wines from Pieroth - why didn’t they ask me first? The worst wine company in the UK?

To be fair, some credit for me having 7 pallets of the stuff should go to the Hillbilly. He did scour the Appalachian package stores for Truchot and was able to haul away many cases on his tractor.
