That seems quite interesting… Too bad the wiki doesn’t tell us their secret handshake…
OLD line Burg society. I remember doing a dinner for them in NOLA in the 80’s and, when I proposed a Pernand Vergelesses as a value alternative to Meursault the YOUNG one of the group (who was about 75) says, “Young man, this is a BURGUNDY organization!”. Pouilly Fuisse coming right up sir!
Art Buchwald wrote a hilarious essay about his initiation dinner (held at Clos Vougeot) in his book “I’ll always have Paris”…
They also used to brand individual barrels from various AOCs with their label after anointing them as superior at their tastings.
I haven’t seen those labels around NYC in ages. I wonder why.
I do events for them here in ATL.
Nothing secret society or anything. There are chapters all across the US (and other locations in the world).
Shoot me an email or PM and ill see if I can answer your questions, etc…
There’s an active chapter up here. Many of the guys in my tasting group are active in it. There is a substantial initiation fee plus an annual fee. They use this to buy and keep a cellar of Burgundy wines. Most of their dinners require a tux, which is the main reason I never joined.
One dinner each year does not require a tux. I went to one of those once with my wife. All the members wear a tasvin on a chain around their neck. My wife still refers to them as “The Sink Drainer Society”.
Always seemed a little silly and pompous to me, but to each his own. They do have nice dinners with good wine. And I hear that the annual bash at Clos Vougeot is quite an experience.
There’s a similar one in St. Emilion. And one in Piedmont called “Ordine dei Cavalieri del Tartufo e dei Vini di Alba”.
Oh come on you big lug…I’m sure you could find something here.
I went to a big dinner in 2007 at the Clos Vougeot…quite a hoot…though I’d skip it next time I had the chance. Lots of goofy theater there; they don’t exactly take themselves that seriously. It’s more of a Burgundy wine chamber of commerce with chapters around the world that pay to be members, so it works all around.
Lots of singing and pagentry…and trumpets…Unfortunately, most of the humor was in French, and I didn’t get too much of it, I guess.
Had dinner with a member last month. He was in his 30’s so not old
