Anyone familiar with Buccella Napa Cab?

Got a nice offer on some was wondering what you experience has been with this?

Very ripe with lots of new wood. If you dig very modern Cali-Cab that it would be a nice wine, if not then don’t.

Thanks.

I second Saul’s perspective…if you are in the mood for a big Cab, though, I think they are well made in that style.

I have a friend always looking for '05. If it’s available somewhere I’d love to know. Thanks.

This.

I had a 2005 two weeks ago, and the wine is still massive with little signs of any component integration. Maybe another decade will tame the tannin and oak. Maybe.

Did they not go through some drama with a few different winemakers in a short period? I very much enjoyed their '07 merlot but hesitated about picking up more.

A little when Mark Herold left.

We carried the Cab and Merlot until they changed distributors recently, (that’s another story). We couldn’t keep the Merlot in the store. Very cab like and big. One of those wines that’s very good when you open it, gets better and better as it opens up over an hour, then pisses you off because you drank it all before it really opened up. One of my favorite merlots. Meanwhile, the cabs haven’t been as approachable.

The cabs are big too, but need some time to develop and flesh out. To get an idea of the potential, open in the morning, decant for an hour, put it back in the bottle, cork it and open one hour before serving.

I had the 07 Buccella Cab about four years ago. I paired it against an 06 Shafer HSS. It was a tie. So, the 07 Buccella CS is very good.

I haven’t had one in a few years, but cut my teeth (no pun intended) on Buccella with the 2003, which was an excellent wine - especially for the vintage. Beautiful packaging, heavy bottles. And yes, the Merlot is very good as well.

Ditto, tried and '07 Cab at a tasting, loved it, bought some.

Not much more to be said. Honestly I can’t tell the difference between the merlot and cab. These are indeed a hedonistic, luscious treat. No subtlety here. I haven’t tried in a few years, and I’ve never tried the one named after their daughter so can’t comment on what these are like today.
I really enjoyed these, but stopped buying because of the bottle shape of all things. The neck on these offer minimum contact between cork and glass. I lost count of the number of times I pushed the cork into the bottle using normal pressure on the screw. If you’ve ever pushed a cork into a full bottle, you know it is not a pretty reaction. I’ve had to paint my kitchen ceiling twice, as well as throw out countless shirts because of those damn bottles!

I also tried the Buccella 07 Cabernet against the 07 Merlot. The Merlot was much smoother than the CS without food. With a steak, I liked the CS better, however. But both are excellent.

Does anyone recall what the release price was for the latest vintage they purchased?

Minor thread drift, so apologies, but Mica is a good intro to Buccella at a cheaper price point.

I paid $125 for the 2007 when purchased in 2010.
Think it’s still around $150 or so for the regular cab.

I missed trying them last year for the first time during tasting for the Napa issue. Rebekah Wineburg has been there since 2009 as Winemaker, Celia Welch since 2008, as Consulting Winemaker. Beautifully made wines with emphasis on scale and polish.

This is an absolutely true and hilarious statement - love it. (and hate it when that happens)

Not a drift at all. Good information for those who might not be familiar with Buccella and their wines. Mica has the same attention to detail and the blend pairs well with most foods. Mica provides an enticing glimpse of the other Buccella wines.
