Anyone ever open a 1981 Le Gay (Pomerol)?

I bought a case for a song almost a year ago but haven’t opened any yet. Given the combination of how they performed in 1982 and how much I’ve enjoyed other 1981 Pomerols (La Conseillante and VCC to name a couple) I’m curious if anyone has any experience here.

LOL, when I read the title I was thinking “1981 La Conseillante and VCC are really good.” But apparently you already know. Unfortunately I haven’t had Le Gay. I had a Certan Giraud that was okay but a little over the hill. I don’t recall recently having any other 81 Pomerol.

Why wait, though?

Not waiting. Recent delivery and haven’t had a chance to crack open the case yet….frankly it might be buried in one of my off-site lockers so I need to locate it first.

I love those two 81s—not all that far off the 82s IMO. And I forgot to mention Trotanoy which is really good too. I’m generally a fan of quite a few 81s—PLL and Haut Brion really good, though the 82s for those and perhaps Trotanoy are difficult comps.

It won’t be great help, but we tasted 1981, 82, 83, 85, 86 Le Gay in comparison in 1992/93 … so 30 years ago … all were still quite tight, 82 clearly the best, and 81 app. comparable with 1986 … promising, a bit rustic and structured …
I had the 86 a few months ago, very good in its style, so I guess 81 is also good when the bottle is in good condition.

+1 that I’d expect this to be good based on how great the 1981 Conseillante is.

Not the same property, but from the same commune (fwiw), a 1981 L’Evangile tasted in December 2017 was in very good form during the dinner and was clearly in the enjoyable-drinking camp as many other old-school mature+ Right Bank wines that we had. I heard then that Pomerol did well in that vintage.

edited to add and to give credit to (iirc) John, the bringer.

1981 Conseillante has always been good. Haven’t had one recently but I had one in the mid 90s that I still remember as awesome.

Believe me, it is still beautiful!

Had the 82 with Kane and French last year. It was quite nice, elegant, but nothing that I would say puts it into the upper ranks of 82 Pomerol. Would surprise me if 81 is any better, but who the heck knows. Start popping those old dogs!
