Lauded vintages are the most talked about, but I am curious, are there any vintages that are universally looked down upon but you think are quite good?
Which vintages? Which region?
A good deal on a wine can sometimes appear in the form of an “off” vintage wine that actually tastes pretty good 20 years later.
Don’t think 91 is really underrated now and you can’t find wines from that vintage except top wines for high prices. Agree to some degree on 00 and 01, but prices have come up a bit since they’re drinking well now. 14 has always been considered a good vintage if somewhat lower in price than 15.
As for Bordeaux, are folks here too young to recall actual bad years like 1992 or 1993? 1997 was mediocre at best with a very few that rose to the level of nice wines.
Citing ‘99, ‘01, ‘04, and ‘08 as off vintages displays a distinct lack of context. I might let ‘99 slide in, but the rest? No.
I can understand this. I don’t consider them off or bad, just eclipsed by demand for vintages like '00, '05, and then the duo of '09 and '10 in the broad strokes. Doesn’t make them bad or off in my book. I’m actually fond of '04 and '01.
Sometimes I find my perspective at odds with the critics, especially those that tend to ‘warmer/riper = better’ thinking. In such cases, their designation of off / bad vintages can be ones I’d actively seek out in preference to their favourites.
Thank you so MUCH for sharing your brilliant insight with us! No poop emojis here! This wine pro just told us that is is OK to drink 01 and 04, but not 99. Thank you so much! Every single nugget you share with us is so precious!!!
