Any love for Federweisser?

We were in Germany this month and brought back bottles of Federweisser and Federroter. No idea what grapes these were made from.

It is basically grape must that just started fermenting. Bottles are open because CO2 is still produced. Dass (der?) lebendige Genuss it was called in a restaurant where we had it with the traditional Zwiebelkuchen.

It does not keep long and is only sold in the fall.

Is it wine? It is fermented grape juice…

The alcohol % depends on how long it has fermented. The versions I drank were very sweet and low in alkohol. If you like soft drinks, this could be the gateway to wine. Not so hard seltzer.

I like it but after a couple of glasses the sweetness becomes overpowering. It is an interesting drink though. If I am in Germany when it is in season I always try to find some.

Are there upscale producers making Federweisser? Would be interesting to try.
