Any input on 2004 Dancing Hares?

Serge and his significant other are coming over for dinner and the superbowl tonight. I am thinking of opening up my first 2004 Dancing Hare’s. This wine has had alot of buzz over the last couple of years. I have not had one , but my curiosity is going to commit infanticide tonight (I think).

Has anyone had this before? Any thoughts? Is it even approachable? I have heard very recently that this is more Merlot then Cab based, anyone have any idea?

My goto was going to be 99 Altamura, but that is going to be predictable (excellent wine). I wanted to be adventurous tonight and figuring Serge will bring something almost as old as my wife tonight, I thought a younger wine would be a nice balance.

Thanks

Alan - keep it on the cool side. Had it once and didn’t like it at all. Hot disjointed and just not very pleasant IMO. Others may feel differently though

Alan, heavy lumber there. Did not care for the wine at all.

I haven’t had the 2004 in a while, and wasn’t too impressed by it, but if you have the 2005 it is performing very well at present.

Thanks for all the input, I will hibernate the wine and keep it on its side for a few more years. I will pull something more reliable out.

Again, thanks for the input, it proved to be very valuable.

I love the name. A friend in Australia has a vineyard called “Prancing Horse”.

Was never a fan of this one either. ‘Buzz’ is the operative word…buzz, and only buzz.
Would like to hear your thoughts, Alan.

anybody have the 2003 recently?

The only one I’ve had was the 2006, last summer. Big, boozy, lush, kind of nondescript. Not terrible or even bad, but I was disappointed overall. I’d use them to serve to your male non-geek friends, who are probably most likely to appreciate the wine.

I have several bottles. I opened one over a year ago and was not overly impressed… honestly disappointed. It required serious air time (3 hours) to open up… overall I thought it was nondescript. I opened another one about 3 months ago and it was performing better, but still requires decanting and a lot of air time. I don’t think this wine will ever get over 88 points. It needs food… ribeye steak.

wow. I agree with all of you; I had the 2004 recently as well and was disappointed immensely. All of us can’t be wrong

thank you to all…maybe I’ll go on a tasting appointment before I buy.
