Chappellet. Family owned, family operated for over 50 years. Their Signature Cabernet is a great value. Plus they have some interesting Pinots & Chards from single vineyards in Carneros and Russian River.
Myriad- some under 100 some over but always a great visit
Neal Family - great age worthy wines
Frogs Leap- terrific tasting there in 2019 including some library vintages
Long Meadow Ranch- beautiful Rutherford and Napa Cabs well under $100.
Dakota Shy- might be able to taste their wines and Detert. Tom Detert makes both
Turnbull- The Oakville SVD’s are over 100 but really great wines and at club pricing below many of their peer group.
Di Costanza- my favorite wines right now. Always great to visit with Erin.
AXR in St. Helena has several offerings under 100$. Beautiful grounds and very delicious wines.
Aonair and Reverie II has amazing wines as well. They can take you on the ATV to the mountain top for gorgeous views.
Chase Cellars - highly relaxed, chilled place for tasting. Historic grounds, almost all wines are under 100$. Russell Bevan is the winemaker.
Tasting at Hall is about as fun as slamming a car door on your private parts. It is the antithesis of what I enjoy about wine country. Would love to taste at Lagier Meredith, though. Just gave my dad a bottle of theirs to try since he was hunting for really good and reasonably affordable US syrah.
Tasting up the mountain with Carole and Steve is freakin’ fantastic - you’ll never forget it. (and they have to drive down the mountain to show you how to get up there)
If you’re willing to go just over the top of the Spring Mountain into Sonoma, Fisher Vineyards is a great visit. Terrific wines, most under $100, and beautiful grounds. The staff were terrific when we visited, as well.
That would make a great visit back to back with Pride, which is near the top of Spring Mountain.
This is a great recommendation and would go had I not been there before. I’m headed for two days in Sonoma and one and a half in Napa. Staying in St. Helena so was thinking of starting the day off far north (Chateau Montelena or Rivers Marie) then making my way back to lunch at Farmstead and something around there like Heitz, Freemark Abbey or Phelps and then finish off the day at Pride Mountain. Day two we’re thinking of heading south to make our way out of Napa and hit up Sonoma square (Auteur, Bedrock, maybe) before heading to Healdsburg. Been to Sonoma quite a lot and feel like we’ve hit up every major pinot producer in RRV.
Well, many great suggestions, but y’all missed several superstar (“under the radar”) smaller wineries I know all-so-well in southern Napa:
Bouchaine (new spectacular TR in Carneros, outstanding PN and Chard as well as other reds & sparkling, tough to beat QPR for high quality at reasonable $);
John Anthony (downtown Napa, very low volume but will compare their Cab & Chard with $150+ counterparts and win hands-down);
Hyde (small TR in their vineyards in Carneros, they save some of their best fruit for themselves and it shows);
Cuvaison (new TR in Carneros, killer Chards and all reds, solid QPR as well).
And one add-on to Long Meadow Ranch - my go-to for any visitor’s lunch in there at Farmstead, superb dining at a reasonable price and great service…insider info.
Matthiasson. All under that price point and a really great mix of wines. They lean AFWE or more old school in style (higher acid and lower abv) so if you are looking for big, powerful ripe Napa cabs, this is probably not that place.
Eric, we look forward to hosting you up at the vineyard or our new winemaking facility the next time that you’re in Napa. Just let me know when that is and we’ll make it happen!
