Long story short, I’ve run out of space to store wine, and it’s just become a headache to store and manage my collection. I’ve realized that my palate has changed, and I’ve got probably about 10 cases of wine I need to dump because I’ll probably never drink it. There’s nothing super fancy, probably about 6 or 7 cases of Bedrock single vineyard Zins (e.g. Bedrock Heritage, Monte Rosso, Under the Mountain, Oakville Farmhouse) from 2012-2022 that I’ve kept in offsite. I like the Bedrock guys, I support their causes, but I just don’t have the room, time, or palate to enjoy these anymore (though I still quite like their rose and Evangelho).
Is there any market for these on winebid/K&L? I’d like to recoup at least some of my costs, but if it’s going to be like $5 a bottle, it’s not worth my time and energy, and I’ll just have to dispose of them some other way. I can’t sell on commerce corner because of professional licensing issues. Thanks!
I would definitely look to Winebid, though I’m not sure you’ll meet there current minimum. If you do, they can probably work out something viable. I sold some stuff recently over a broad range and I had a good experience, better than i’ve had with consignment situations, though I’ve never used K&L. (CC can be great for both seller and buyers but with that number of bottles, I would suspect it would be a pain in the butt, in any case.)
If K&L doesn’t want to auction it, they will generally make you a cash offer that’s probably around 60% of retail. They might refuse some stuff but I suspect they’ll take Bedrock.
I just sold 300 or so bottles using winebid and I highly recommend them. Yes, they’re expensive, but they have wine usership and they handle the shipping, etc. One thing I did was send them my inventory for sale and they sent back a complete list with their recommended price per bottle and a minimum reserve, as well as a few bottles they wouldn’t sell. Using those numbers, I decided to just keep a few cases that I figured wouldn’t move or were set at Winebid’s minimum.
I’d also try Commerce Corner. I’d buy a case of Bedrock from you, price depending.
K&L will take all your single vineyard stuff and sell at auction. They’ll group into lots which will reduce the overhead of $8 per lot + 15% of final sale. If you take store credit you will get the 15% fee waived - so it’s a pretty good deal.
If you use the “Search past auction lots” function on their website, you can see what past lots of bedrock have hammered for. $30-40 pb usually.
At least in the DC area they sent a truck to my house to pick the wine up. Couldn’t be easier. I suspect there were ways I could have milked a few more bucks out of the wine I sold but this process was absolutely painless and I would do it again. In fact, I will do it again. Contact Sterling Roig. He was immensely helpful
depending on what tax bracket you are in consider donating them to a cause of your choice and taking the tax write off. Anything under 5k doesnt have to be appriased.
I’ve taken small quantities (a case or two) and mixed bottles including ones at and below Bedrock SVD level to Spectrum Wine Auctions and they’ve happily sold them for me.
Just an option if the bigger sites don’t want your business.
Danny, send me a list of the bottles and where you’re located. Just what state your wines are in is fine. I can put it in front of the boss and, if he thinks it’s worth it, he will make you a (legal) and fair offer on them. I work in the business in the NYC Metro area for Morrell & Company and we do this often. I know a lot of our clients love Bedrock. I do, too.
