Thanks for the update and I’ll be passing on mine.

I think supporting 3 Nigel projects is enough for me (Kinsman Eades, Bergman Family Vineyards, and Bella Oaks). This one just isn’t as exciting as the others and the Beckstoffer Las Piedras and Napa Valley wines are already available at KLaz by the way.

Wish them well!

do you have a vested interest here or just had an extra cup of coffee this morning?

Apparently the extra cup of coffee did the trick this morning. No vested interest here (unfortunately), just a big fan of Nigel’s projects and found it interesting that the offering had opened up this far ahead of schedule.

Also, I have been such a big consumer of the WB community content, it was time for me to contribute.

One of the Berserkers accidentally discovered Bergman had a Preferred Access window so I purchased my 3pk on the 10th (official release was yesterday).

I am attending an event on October 10th in Chicago where Annulus will be pouring their wines. I want to try them first before buying.

Love seeing this - welcome!

I’m also passing, though I do like that they offered the mix pack and option to do without the wood box.

When I heard about Annulus, I was very excited to jump on the list, particularly because my wife and I very much enjoy wines coming from the Beckstoffer Las Piedras vineyard. Caitlin graciously hosted us at Wheeler Farms, and we had the opportunity to taste through the lineup prior to their release.

During our tasting we also learned that there may be additional wines coming down the pipeline, including a more affordable Napa Valley Cabernet, as well as some new fruit sources in the upcoming vintages that they are working with. We also discussed some goals and visions of the label, one of which is to eventually increase the price and quality of the current Napa Valley bottling to match that of the SVDs, similar to what Memento Mori or Lithology does. Overall, I really enjoyed two of the four wines poured, and believe that at their current price point, it’s worth adding them to the cellar!

We tasted a total of 4 wines. My notes below will also be posted on CT.

2022 Annulus Sauvignon Blanc - this wine was okay. A bit heavy for my taste profile, but still balanced, and refreshing on a warm day. Unfortunately, it didn’t stand out among all the wines we tasted. Personally, I would stick to Accendo’s Sauvignon Blanc (among others) for around the same price point.

2021 Annulus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon - this wine surprised us a bit with how ready to drink it was already. Silky smooth mouth feel, velvety tannin structure, with lots of lush blue and black fruit, and a slight herbal character. A good minerality is also present on the palate, and the finish was very slightly sweet. I kept coming back to this wine during the tasting, and thought that it held its own besides the Las Piedras SVD.

2021 Annulus Beckstoffer Las Piedras Cabernet Sauvignon - this wine was dark, brooding, and screaming graphite upon first sip. Classic Las Piedras profile with decadent black fruit, cassis, crushed gravel, and a superb minerality. Surprisingly, this wine was already showing well overall, but it was only a glimpse into the power and the monster of a wine that it will evolve into. Tannins and acidity were both noticable, but not overly astringent or sour. I think this is an excellent representation of the vineyard for Nigel’s first venture into Beckstoffer fruit (as far as I am aware).

2021 Annulus Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon - I would like to preface by saying that Vine Hill Ranch is not my favorite vineyard, one of the reasons being that it is so large. The size of the vineyard creates very different expressions of wine in my opinion, and I’ve had some very amazing wines and some okay wines from the vineyard. This wine, specifically, falls in the middle, but needs time. It’s a well made wine, but simply too young to drink, and thus not showing as well as the Napa Valley and Las Piedras bottling. During the course of the tasting, I felt that this wine never fully came together and there was a dis-integration between the very high acidity and the astringent tannins that sort of clashed with each other. Definitely the most tannic and brooding of the three Cabernets, the potential is definitely there but it just needs to lay low for a while.

My overall takeaway here is that Annulus is a new producer that is worth checking out if you like Nigel’s winemaking style, but more importantly, if you specifically like Las Piedras. I’m glad to have picked up some of the Napa Valley, which I consider good value for Cabernets coming out of Napa nowadays, as well as the Las Piedras, and look forward to getting them into our cellar!

I took a mixed 3-pack of cabs. Love that they had this option, as I was torn between the LPV and VHR (but due to recent wallet damage couldn’t swing both).

In for a three pack each of the Napa and Las Piedras, still on the fence about the VHR.

Now if Jerome P decides to go full retard and cut 75 bps in a half hour, and gold rips to $2800 on the news, then I’ll be buying the Maggies for all

There are just so many Kinsman projects nowadays it’s hard to justify one more. We already have Aphex, Kodo, Kaannos, Bella oaks CS + Le Genie, and Impensata coming for 2021, just impossible to jump on more (esp. when KE already produces a VHR).

well, we’ve all been there. The temptation is REAL

I am confident these wines will be amazing.

My wife and I will be in Napa next weekend, meeting up with Nigel and Shae re: their KE wines, so maybe I’ll reach out to see if they can bring along some Annulus samples.

If that happens, I’ll be sure to circle back and share my thoughts…

Met up with Nigel on SAT afternoon over at Wheeler Farms, tasted a couple '21 KE offerings (all were delicious, but that Rhad is next level).

Asked him about the Annulus project and he is very excited for the wines he made, but was especially fired up about the Las Piedras.

Wish i could have some tasting notes on the wines to share, but his word is good enough for me to be a buyer!

Circling back here, as requested. I got to try these last evening at a Napa Valley Vintners event here in Chicago - wineries represented were Annulus, B Cellars, Gemstone, St. Supery, Stewart. The Vintners rep also brought 2 PNV bottles.

Annulus was easily my favorite. I got to try the '21 Napa Valley, LPV and VHR. All three were great in their own regards, but needed a good 2 hours to really show.

The Napa Blend was the most OK of the bunch, but that is not to say it was not good. I would drink the wine within the next 5 years or so. The LPV and VHR were very good, but need a solid 5-10 years. The LPV was a different (yet still tasty) expression of the vineyard. I was expecting more floral, ethereal, soft and while it was the softer of the two SVDs, I got chalk as well on the palette, and it was unlike any other LPV I’ve had. The VHR is great, but having been allocated the Kaannos as well, I wonder how it will compare.

Terrific notes, thank you for sharing. My allocation/order arrived today. Safe to say shipping season is officially upon us. I am confident I am not alone when I say I am anxious to pull a cork and taste my way though these wines. Nonetheless, thank you for the detailed notes @kevin_s. These will definitely help me and many others make some informed decisions.
