American Dessert Wine Suggestions?

Hey Guys,

I am looking at getting my dad a gift and I was thinking about a dessert wine from America. My dad is a huge fan of the Klein Constantia Vin de Constance and Château d’Yquem.

I stubbled upon the Sine Qua Non Sémillon Mr. K The Straw Man, and was wondering if anyone here has had this or knows of any really good/great dessert wines from America.

Many thanks,

Greg

Finger Lakes ice wine.

My favorites are the Late Harvest Cluster Select wines from Navarro.

Joseph Phelps Vineyards Eisrebe
Reasonable

The SQN stickies are as good as it gets for me

If you slip into North America- Inniskillin Cab Franc Ice Wine does it for me !! (Canada)

The bedrock late harvest (appears intermittently) is really a serious contender. BUT, you want cache’ for a big gift…go SQN. He’ll appreciate the thought.

Hell, do both as a fun counterpoint/comparison.

just to clarify…Sine Qua Non makes other white dessert wines. Ice man, Straw man, Noble Man come to mind. They have made others that were more “one offs”

Thanks guys.

Ned - I believe he actually really enjoys Inniskillin, I just looked at his CT and he has a few of them.

Cody - Which have you tried/really enjoyed?

My two favorites, both listed above:

SQN / Mr K
Navarro Late Harvest Cluster Select

The Martini-Reinhardt Riesling Trockenbeeren from Anthony Road Winery in the Finger Lakes is FAR better than anything I’ve had from the West Coast (haven’t had any SQN). The other Anthony Road dessert wines are also very good.

Also a fan of Navarro.
If you can find older late havest wines from Phelps or Chateau St. Jean, these can be excellent.

The Bedrock is quite good, if you’re just talking about drinking rather than it being a prestige bottle.

I highly recommend Oro Puro, a Napa Sauternes-like wine made by Abe Schoener.

Jonathan

If you can find it - Linden late harvest petite manseng. Yes, Virginia.

Thanks guys and JoeD I believe my dad has actually enjoyed a bottle or two of some of the dessert wines from White Hall in VA, as we are from NOVA too.

No love for Dolce, eh?

I like Dolce…but for the $$…would rather get a Sauterne

Already gotten the dolce in the past haha, but as the the SQN which ones have you guys tried?

I noticed that for example the Noble Man it comes as a Chardonnay and as a Viognier

I’d go for Dolce, but I might recommend Grgich’s Violetta instead, although it is hard to find.

Morlet Billet Doux (2009 if you can find it).
