So my friend Sam has 2 5Ls of Amarone. He wants me to come over and help him open each one and pour it into 750mls and recork them. He is convinced that they will stay well forever this way.
I’m not so convinced.
But it sounds like a fun time and I would get to drink a boatload of Amarone.
The wine will last much longer in its current format than if you expose it to oxygen and then recork after pouring it into 6 plus bottles. I wouldn’t do it.
I wouldn’t do it. The wines will be exposed to quite a bit of oxygen this way, some of which will be dissolved in the wines in their new bottles. I think they will oxidize. I have read that recorking is usually done in a special environment (very little oxygen) for this reason.
Thanks guys. That’s what I told him but he was sure he could do it. At best I thought you might get a week or so out of the bottles just so that you didn’t have to drink 5L at once. But I think he wanted to just break it down into 750s for later use. I told him he was crazy.
Oh well, I’d get to drink it the first day it is popped and then it would be his problem!
If he didn’t pay much for these, maybe he could get a few people together or bring them to parties or something. He could pour some into 750s, gas them, and enjoy them over the subsequent few days.
So it is dreck? I’ve never heard of the producer. I told him to just bring it over one night when we do our monthly tasting so everyone could try it. Plus it would be awesome to open a 5L of Amarone…way cooler than the double-mag of 89 beychevelle he brought a few months ago.
