Am I missing something about this online wine store's name?

I’m not always that up on all the colloquialisms in use out there but I only know one meaning for this store’s name and can’t imagine why anyone would give an even close-to-serious wine business this name. Am I missing something? I guess, though, that the name did get my attention, but beyond that… ? And the wines are “at $30 or below”??? Maybe because it’s Beverly Hills <$30 wine is plonk?

I think I know a little about marketing, but… [scratch.gif]

So the owners of Beverly Hills restaurant The Roach & the Pubic Hair wanted to start a wine shop. What is the big deal?

Perhaps “Wines That Don’t Suck Merchant” was already taken? [shrug.gif]

Could be worse:

OMG, I am re-sharing that. Some people have NO common sense…

Wow. Massive Fail.

Shoulda done Cereal Grapist instead.
Right up there with the 9/11 Memorial Wine “grown 90 miles from the Twin Towers.”

named such so that when you return a bottle that sucked they tell you, “what’d you expect? We told you it was plonk!”
Maybe people just return the good bottles . . .

Must be owned by this guy:

Always thought it was thus named because he couldn’t spell “Atrocious”…
GG

I like the name.

Do they only sell wines that the good Doctor gives a 97+ and that have a 60+ second finish?

Oh no, that would mean that they would have to be $300+ [snort.gif]

I guess the retailer’s attempt at irony is lost on most folks. It’s probably a decent marketing angle for under-30 buyers who could care less about Napa and Bdx due to prices that make those wines too valuable to risk drinking.

If y’all had checked out the proprietress’ videos (or seen a picture), I think you’d have a different opinion. [wink.gif]

Not only does she sell wine under $30, but she was named one of Wine & Spirits “30 under 30”:

Actually I think the name is fine. It rings with irony, and implies inexpensive which appears to be their focus.

Peter,

With all due respect, if you know more than a little about marketing (and I bet you do), isn’t there some parallel between the question you are raising about this merchant’s name and your avatar? You advertise your business in your signature, yet you use an avatar that may attract some potential customers while possibly alienating others. I assume you’ve thought about your customer base and feel it is worth it. I would similarly assume the folks at Plonk Wine Merchants have done the same. I would assume they understand that there are some people out there who would be put off by the name, but that the market they are aiming at, younger people who likely understand Michael Jackson’s use of “bad” to mean “good”, will get the irony.

Just checked out the store and the videos. It is really a pretty good idea. She seems very enthusiastic and I hope she succeeds.

That just doesn’t look good on paper.
