It came out of the gates full speed in the 90s. Now you barely hear of it anymore. What’s happening? FWIW, I have a bottle of the 2000. Anyone have any comments on this particular vintage?
It just went out of style. The wine probably still tastes the same. What happened to Montebello, Dunn Howell, etc. Just out of style. In wine, just like every other hobby people want the latest and the greatest. In ten years people will be asking the same thing about Clos de la Siete, Scarcrow, etc.
Thanks Lyle. I kinda figured the same, but then thought to myself that the 2 powerhouses behind the project (Mouton & Concha y Toro), with their respective history, yada yada yada, would have been enough to keep consumers interested.
They are not the problem (Mouton, Concha y Toro). Chile is. It is just not that much of an interesting place to make wine. They just started taking a leap into figuring it out down there by taking soil samples and figuring out clones so they can figure out what grapes go with their terroir. I give them 50-100 years to figure it out.
IMO, Almaviva makes the best wine in Chile and probably among the best producers in the Southern hemisphere.
In many ways it reminds me of a left bank BDX. Both 03 and 05 vintages are superb and well worth the money and I’m glad to have a good stash in my cellar for future drinking.
As for the 00, a friend of mine opened 2 btls of this while I was on a trip down there last year. The wine was very fragrant and drinking very well but I thought it was a lighter Almaviva and the finish was a bit short. A pretty good drink but nowhere near the quality of the 03 and 05.
Cheers
Lou
Danke. I have a lot of things to say and from not posting on BB’s in almost three years (on and off wine-pages for a bit…but too British for me) they all have been bottled up and are ready to come roaring out.
I’ve tried the 99 & 00 in the past and found them to be very good but not fantastic wines.
In November I pop & poured the 03. Wow, this was amazing. I wish I had more than two bottles. I think it will only improve with time, but a joy to open now. Cheers
bingo. Its a weird thought process, but its in a way easier to drop 65 on a bordeaux or domestic cab/meritage blend. When its on the highest end $$$ wise in an emerging region like that, it seems a bit weird dropping the money
lyle, well said…dont hold in all those thoughts it will give you indigestion
chile----agreed still figuring out what to grow that wont taste like burnt reds
oh well…almaviva expensive five years ago just more expensive now and still not exciting
only disagreement lyle is i am glad montebello is out of fashion, more for the rest of us at a ok price
