All things Elyse!

Yes. I got the email today & I’m not in their club.

odd, as a club member I had access to the 18 Morisoli not the 19. Hmmm…

Had another bottle of the 18 Holbrook Mitchell CS. So good with a few hours of air.

Love that wine. I have reloaded on it twice.

Zin or Cab? I had the Zin available to me, and purchased, but did not buy the Cab - probably because it wasn’t listed, but I see it is now (with the appropriate club discount)

For a few bucks more I think this is much better than the regular EIyse.

Opened a 2019 Morisoli Zin tonight - so, so good. Young? sure, but I prefer my Zins that way, vibrant, spicy, classic zin profile in superb balance. Very tasty.

  • 2019 Elyse Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (11/17/2022)
Decanted for an hour and followed.

Nose is very forward with dark blue fruit, smooth oak, absolute touch of pyrazine herbs. Palate is very open with plenty of smooth ripe fruit. Think blueberries, blackberries, blue raspberry (is this real or just a candy flavor?), supple sage, some stemmy notes too. Underlying oak. Medium body, supple acidity and very supple tannins. Finish shows some light spice, tart blueberries, hint of chocolatey vanilla oak. Relatively short finish.

Not for the cellar. Nice wine and made to drink now. Clearly different from the '18 NV CS (still needs time). Open and accessible. With time in the decanter and glass, I understand where the flabby comment comes from.

Drink now and within the next few years. 89-91 (90 points)

drinking a 2019 Elyse Le Corbeau right now - I really, really liked the 2018 version of this, but this 2019 feels like it needs a year or two. More structure, tannins, still drinking great, just really young. Give 'em a little time if you have 'em.

Would love to find some 2017s of some of their higher end Cabs as it’s my daughter’s birthyear and her name is Elyse. If anyone has some they’d part with, please PM!

If you haven’t, reach out to the winery. I’ll bet they still have some in inventory.

Be aware that 2017 was prior to Russell Bevan taking over the winemaking. The wines are still very good, but not the same style as 2018 and later.

2019 Napa Valley Cabernet tonight, PnP, and about everything I expected. Vibrant nose, tons of spice, black and red fruits, with zippy acidity and soft tannins. Drinking incredibly well young, I don’t see this going the distance, but should be very tasty drinking over the next 5+ years.

I completely agree. These are fun to drink now and over the short term while the top tier wines age a bit.

I’m surprised at how different the Elyse 2019 Napa cab is from the 2018, which needs a couple years in the cellar to tame of the tannins. I’m curious how much that was an intentional shift versus just what the vintage/vineyards gave them.

I also agree. Although 18 seems to be a more tannic vintage across the board, did all the tannins suddenly disappear in 19? Glad I didn’t stock up on the 19 NV CS thinking it’d be like 18.

another bottle of the 2019 Old Vines Zinfandel going down, hard to keep my hands off this one, it is so easy drinking already. Maybe not the most complex Zin ever, but very well integrated, not overly boisterous (if you know what I mean), very soft on the palate with a classic zin profile. Very tasty stuff, and no need to wait imo.

Anyone have opinions about which bottlings to order this time around? I struggle with choosing from a bunch of different bottlings like this when I don’t have the history yet as to how they differ from each other and which ones might be more to my palate.

I tend to prefer Napa cab in a more classical style. Not that I expect these to be super old school wines, but within the spectrum of Elyse, I’d probably prefer more acid, tannin, pyrazines, etc. in a relative sense.

@David_Bu3ker , or anyone else, any guidance for me?

Then stay away from the Proprietary Red.

Maybe go for the Oakville or the Holbrook Mitchell Cab instead?

I thought about dropping it as I’m getting too much. Did a '19 Tietjen and five '20 merlot. Merlot is from the same Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard as this:
