Advice on La Tour d’Argent needed

Taking a wine trip with a couple of friends in October and will overnight in Paris to start. Is La Tour d’Argent worth going? Have they raised the price to a point that hardly any gem could be found? Thank you very much for your advice in advance!

I went with my ex-girlfriend (now wife) a little over two years ago, and we loved everything about it. I loved the list and pouring over it but ultimately I knew I wanted a white Hermitage and preferred Chave. Looking back I wish I had told the sommelier this and then added that I’d like to try something that doesn’t get widely distributed out of France or is hard to find or a producer that isn’t well known because while Chave is stupendous, I can still get it lots of places. Now as far pricing, I don’t think I noticed anything where I thought it was a steal of a deal. They seemed to have fair pricing considering the context, but I don’t really know your personal definition of what is or isn’t a “gem” so I’m not sure that my comments are all that helpful.

Not too long ago on the board someone was saying that they thought very poorly of the restaurant (to paraphrase) and I chimed in that it was sad to hear that it had gone downhill since I visited and loved it so much. Then a few people responded to me and said “I think it’s pretty great too”, so as always there’s a broad spectrum of opinions. I’ll say this though, my wife and I have decided that any time we are going to be in Paris, we are going to make a visit to Tour d’Argent, if that is helpful. Have a great trip.

Thank you, Jonathan! I hope to find well-aged Burgundy substantially under retail. My companions may have different ideas, but we will surely have a great time rummaging through the thick list.

I think you’ll find some good deals at LTA. Will you find aged Rousseau chambertin for €800? Probably not anymore.

I am sure that the list has been pillaged many times over especially by the people on here.

We were just there in November. It was amazing! Worth every penny. Of course we had the Canard ala Press.

Picking a Champagne was easy. I didn’t even attempt to navigate the red for dinner.

PS: The list is so big, they bring you a side table to place it on.

If you are in love this seems like the best reason to go

If you go in with this attitude I think you will be disappointed. I go three or four times a year especially now that the bar on the ground floor is open from 9 am to 11 pm and you can order off the main list. Sometimes we order higher end bottles (DRC etc.) sometimes we just explore wines that have been stored well that we could never find in the U.S. On our last visit to the bar in June we had a 93 Raveneau Montee de Tonnerre and a rare 93 Dagueneau that I have never seen before both were around 300 euros each. I prefer lunch because I don’t love the food moreso because it is not the way I like to eat, the food has gotten much better. At lunch we do the small menu, relax, enjoy the view and have lots of cheese and share two bottles together…it is all around magical!

These prices are indeed “substantially under retail”.

Just go in chill and take in Paris!

Thanks, we’ll have a grand time!

Hi Charles!

After eschewing the restaurant for decades through its ups and downs in reputation, we decided to take the plunge last September. I was intrigued by the buzz around the remodel and reopening that had just happened and decided the experience was overdue.

My wife and I have eaten at the table of many of the great chefs in France over many years, and we agreed that this was one of our most fun (and anticipated) dining experiences. The food was terrific, as advertised with the reopening. We had just spent two weeks in Burgundy, so I had pre-decided to change gears from burgundy to northern Rhone for the duck main. After the obligatory glass of champagne and white wine I chose a bottle of 2004 Jamet which was in the middle of about 8 different vintages of the wine on the list. I think it was 325 euros which I thought very fair.

Overall the experience was fantastic: the view, none better, the incredible kind and attentive staff, the theater (gentleman on knee proposing, another man in sparkly shoes two tables down), exceptional wine and food! Have fun!

Thank you very much, Bruce! Sounds a lot of fun. We will definitely enjoy it, which will be a perfect start of our Burgundy and Piedmont tour.

Did they have a lot of older Champagne? I’d be looking for bottles that are 1950s, 60s, 70s ideally.

Great question! Unfortunately I don’t recall if they did have bottles that went back that far.

The list is truly mammoth. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if they did.

I’m having lunch there next week and will check it out.

Has anyone tried La Rotisserie D’Argent lately? Menu looks good.

i was at rotisserie 10/23 with my kid
food was good. we both enjoyed the rotisserie chicken.
the wine list iirc was ok to good

after having the chicken at brutos that sunday we agreed we’d prefer brutos every time

It’s fine. Nothing special. We went because it was nearby an Olympic event we were attending.

Love this place!
