Advice/info: Saar Riesling Summer 2024

Does anyone have experience, advice, or tips for the upcoming “Saar Riesling Summer 2024” in the Mosel region? It’s August 24th/25th.
@Robert_Dentice @Lars_Carlberg

Looks like I have to be in Germany for work the week after (27th - 30th).
On previous work trips to Germany, I spent time visiting/exploring Rheingau.
I’ve also been acquiring quite a few Rieslings from Hofgut Falkenstein, Stein, Weiser-Kunstler, Keller & Max Kilburg from SourceMaterial, and others. I would love to visit a couple of these on Monday (Aug 26th) and learn more about the vineyards, winemakers, stories, etc.

The Saar Riesling Summer event seemed like a fun way to taste/learn about a number of wineries at once.
I’m open to ideas/advice/help, especially with connecting & visiting any of the wineries noted above.

(FWIW – I already visited moselfinewines.com and requested the 2024 visitors guide!)

It’s been many years since I attended SaarRieslingSommer, but you should go to the event, which has a bus shuttle service.

Note: Hofgut Falkenstein and Egon Müller are the only two top Saar producers who don’t partake.

@JarrettK Hello, I am jealous, this will be fun! I have two producers that I work with and I used to work at a winery in that region during my winemaking studies.
Margarethenhof in Ayl
I can definitely organize a visit with Margarthenhof for you. Nico the winemaker is actually coming to visit in two weeks. I will ask him what else he recommends in that area regarding wineries and restaurants if you’d like. Feel free to message me directly as well.

Saarkind - unfortunately there is no English version of this but it has a lot of young/next generation winemakers on there.

I have never done the Saar event. I have been in the Saar during this event and I think maybe attended an evening event related to it.

On the plus side you would certainly get to taste a lot of wines from many different producers and I am sure it is well organized. On the negative side wineries rarely pour their top wines for events like this.

I edited my earlier response are all of the wineries on the map those that attend? I see a map with a 14 stops and lot of non-Saar wineries? If so there lots of very good wineries there.

I still think if I had the choice between visiting 2-3 top producers a day in the Mosel and Saar I would definitely do that over spending two days at the Saar Riesling event. That is just me.

If you opt for the 3 days of scheduling on your own. Reach out to Max Kilburg, Stein, Weiser-Kunstler (all in the Mosel) and see if they are available. We can all give you others to see to fill out your schedule.

Thank you for the replies and sorry for the delayed responses as I finalized trip plans.
I’ll likely send a few direct messages.

Yes, according to the Saar event map, there are 15 “stations” either pouring their wine and/or pouring wine from guest winemakers outside the region. I realize they might not be pouring their top wines. But the opportunity to experience such a variety in 1 day is something I can’t pass up! lol

  • @LisaT Margarethenhof is one of the stations (+ guest winemakers are: Weber Bruder, Steven Schmidt)
  • Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken (inc Peter Lauer, Weingut AJ Adam) seems like a must stop.
  • Van Volxem has Markus Molitor + Kunstler

Those are some of the names/wines that jump out at me thanks to threads here on berserkers.

I’m going to stay at Zetlinger Hof, which I noticed is VERY close to Weiser-Kunstler and Max Kilburg (or Geierslay estate.) My hope to visit a few top producers Mon (26th) and Tues (27th).

Thanks again for the response. I look forward to sharing some trip notes.

That sounds like a great plan @JarrettK
Nico from Margarethenhof is with me in CA right now for a tour. I told him about you visiting already. I can connect you with him via email if you’d like.
