LOPEZ VINEYARD
Sylvie Estate is located on the east side of the Oakville AVA of Napa. The 0.8-acre vineyard is nestled into the foothills that transition from the Vaca Range to the valley floor. The area is famous for its red dirt, rich in iron and clay, producing textured wines of unique character. The vineyard was planted in 2000 with cabernet sauvignon vines gifted to Henry Lopez from a generous neighbor and hand-tended under CCOF (California Certified Organic Farming) guidelines by Kendall Smith & Ruben Rubio since 2010. Winemaker Kurt Niznik uses his twenty plus years of winemaking experience (Continuum, Marita’s Vineyard, Garden Creek) to produce an elegant wine with a pure sense of place. Henry and Christina have lived on the Oakville property since 1989 and personally built their adobe-style home next to the small but mighty vineyard. We’ve named our signature cabernet sauvignon after Christina’s strong, spirited mother.

I was extremely fortunate to be one of the Monopole Cru Newbie Testers for Sylvie and received the wines from the winery at no cost. My group met on Sunday to eat, taste, and provide notes of the wines that were sent. We were supposed to have five tasters but two were last minute scratches. These notes are a composite of the three tasters’ impressions, with some additional editorial notes at the end. The three wines we tasted were the 2013, 2016 and 2018 Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. I see that the 2013 is not offered for Berserker Day, so I will just provide a brief impression with my wrap up notes.

2016 Sylvie Cabernet Sauvignon Lopez Vineyard Oakville Napa

Super dark in the glass, with spicy notes of cinnamon and cedar on this nose. A complex and attractive nose. Black fruit on entry resolving into dark red cherry, the palate is explosive with nice acidity and tannic structure. Long finish and very typical of a well-made Napa Cab. Day two was similar – these will probably last a long time.

2018 Sylvie Cabernet Sauvignon Lopez Vineyard Oakville Napa

Take everything written about the 2016 and amp it up by at least 50%. This is a quintessential example of Napa Cab. Tons of structure. This was the biggest, darkest, and most tannic of the three vintages by far. This falls into the “if you’re going to do it, than really go for broke” camp. It’s a massive wine with a lot of dark fruit and a lot of chewy tannins to smack you in the face. Day two was equally massive and impressive.

These are extremely tasty and powerful Napa Cabs - really fun to taste and come back to. While I’ve consumed plenty over the years, I don’t drink those too often and I definitely enjoyed the 2016 and 2018.

Our impression of the 2013 was of a different wine from the two younger vintages and wondered if the winemaker had changed between the 2013 and 2016 vintages. It was a less structured and powerful expression of Napa Cab then its siblings.

These wines represent the style very well. My group was very enthusiastic about these wines. We all also admired the packaging - they are very pretty bottles to look at. And even better to pour into the glass and drink! Thank you very much for the opportunity to try them!!!

Adam, thank you for admiring the wines. From 2010 on, our winemaker has been Kurt Niznik. No changes there. Our first vintage was in 2010. We chose not to make wine in 2011. In 2012, it had more red fruit flavor and a lighter body, which was unusual for that vintage compared to other Oakville cabs. Kurt had been playing around with harvest times to achieve elegance over bravado. Then it came 2013, which was, upon its release, a big tannic wine now showing age at the ten-year mark…currently showing pomegranate, brandied cherry, softened tannin, and some savory black olive notes. We redesigned our packages in 2015 with the new stunning label you mentioned - thank you. We wanted the packaging to reflect the wine style and quality. By the time Kurt got to the 2015 vintage, he had dialed in his preferred style—elegant with plenty of personality. Thank you for your notes. We’re glad your group enjoyed the wines – cheers!
