We had the great pleasure of stopping by to see @Bobby_Moy to taste some of his current releases, and to pick up our Berserker Day wines.
First off, if you haven’t been, put this on your list for your next Napa visit. Bobby operates out of an unassuming warehouse in a business park…truly off the beaten path.
Nonetheless, when you get inside, you’re in Napa. The tasting room area (really the anteroom of the winery) is beautifully appointed and comfortable. Bobby is basically a one-man show, so an appointment is necessary. Once you are there, you’re his sole guests.
He decanted a generous number of his wines in advance of our arrival. This is a cursory rundown (because I’m terrible at these write-ups), but hopefully you get the idea…
2021 “First Dance” Chardonnay A rather limited release, from what he told us. This spent a long time in the barrel, and is well-rounded, a bit nutty, with great acid to back it up. The oak influence is quite subtle, though. I believe he said this was made mainly for his wine club. They’ll be quite happy with this Chardonnay.
2019 “Lucid Dream” Pinot Noir 100% whole cluster from Fiddlestix Vineyard. Lithe and supple. A really nice California Pinot Noir that has profited from a bit of age.
2022 “Mind the Wild” Grenache Bobby is a big Grenache lover, and this McGah Vineyard specimen is one he can be proud of. It’s all Grenache, wall-to-wall, very sexy and everything you’d want in a Cali Grenache. I was very happy to have ordered some.
Black Powder 2022 “All Blacks”. I believe this was offered on Berserker Day as “Proprietary Red,” at $20 a bottle. If you bought this, you bought well. This is a Grenache (about 35% IIRC) and Petite Sirah blend, but the Grenache character can’t be denied. A delicious, ready-to-drink red that will please a broad range of wine drinkers, at a fantastic price.
Black Powder 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley. This is a blend of multiple Napa sites. It’s a great value given the quality. “Classic Napa Cab” is the descriptor I uttered.
**Chiron 2020 “Sun’s Canvas” Cabernet **. Now we’re really cooking. I recall that I thought this somewhat old-school. Those skeptical of the “Rutherford dust” descriptor should try this one, because it’s got that in a big (and delicious) way.
Chiron 2021 “Spring Theory” Cabernet This one made me put down my glass and take a breath. 100% Spring Mountain Cabernet, this wine is top-drawer. Beguiling herbal/menthol elements, glorious Cabernet fruit. This, along with “Sun’s Canvas,” were part of a Berserker Day offer that will leave buyers very happy.
Again, big thanks to Bobby for making time for us at the beginning of harvest season. If you make the trip to Napa, I’d highly recommend making an appointment.
