A visit with Bobby Moy at Chiron

It was a total pleasure for my wife and me to head out to see Bobby to pick up our Berserker Day orders and taste through a number of his wines.
For those who haven’t been, my advice is just to do it. Bobby makes wine in a warehouse complex on the southern outskirts of Napa. If approaching from the south (like from Sacramento or the North Bay), this would be one of the closest wineries as you head in.
Inside this unassuming warehouse, though, is a beautifully appointed and comfortable tasting room, one which is as inviting and hospitable as any small winery you might encounter in the Valley.
My recall is a bit wanting, as is my ability to write tasting notes, but hopefully this gives you an idea…

Bobby makes wine under three separate labels: Chiron, Black Powder, and Brevity. These have different areas of focus, but he’s obviously happy with what he’s accomplished with all of them.
Some of the wines we tried…

2021 Chiron “Nectar Dance” Chardonnay: A blend from Oak Knoll, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz Mountains. Light, stylish oak profile. Super acidity. A Californian Chardonnay done right. Should be a total winner with food.

2018, 2019, 2021 “Unfamiliar Truth” Grenache: I’m honestly not 100% on my recall of the first 2 vintages (2018/19, or 2019/20?). These are all 100% Grenache, a variety Bobby is really passionate about, each vintage from different vineyards. Tasting these sequentially was really cool, as the lines of similarity (bright rhubarb/berry fruit and a certain savory/crunchy quality) were apparent, but there were many differences that made it an interesting study. All are totally drinkable now, but holding wouldn’t hurt either.

2020 Black Powder Napa Valley Cabernet: A rich, balanced style, great Cabernet fruit up front. Could definitely hold. Would be a great match with a ribeye now, though.

2020 Bolide Cuvee: This is the Combsville Cabernet he offered on B-Day. Unfortunately, Bobby related to us, a number of wineries didn’t bottle 2020 wines themselves out of fear of consumer reticence due to smoke, though a number of those wines are actually totally unaffected, including this one. Our gain, however. Super cooler-region Napa Cabernet. Nice herbal component, lithe and muscular in a good way.

2017 “Spring Theory” Cabernet: 100% Spring Mountain Cabernet. If you like Napa mountain fruit, this is your jam, no doubt. Lots of structure, would do well with some years on its side. It’s delicious right now, but probably would be even better after unwinding a bit.

(?) “Candor” Cabernet: I think this was a 2015 vintage wine…need to take notes or better iPhone photos or something! From a very small, old vineyard. Super old-school, great grip and menthol/pyrazine elements. This one genuinely made me nostalgic.

Brevity 2018 Pinot Noir Mission Ranch, Monterey: We didn’t taste this at Chiron. but I had some just the night before, so I’m including it. I had picked up some of this on last year’s B-Day, and was really hoping it would show up again this year. I was thrilled to see that it did. The B-Day Brevity thread tells you most of what you need to know, but basically this is a delicious Pinot that is drinking great right now. On the dark cherry/orange rind/baking spice side of the spectrum, open from the get-go, just as good the next day. Those who acquired it will be quite happy.

I can only reiterate how much we enjoyed our visit. I would not hesitate for a second to schedule it if you are going to be in the area. He is kind of a one-man show, so advance arrangements are definitely necessary.

Sounds like a great place to stop by. I purchased both the Bolt of Cloth and the Black Powder but have not tried either. Did he mention where any of his grapes are sourced from? I know he purchased from some high end vineyards who did not want to bottle a 20 but very little insight on what those might be. Did you make any additional purchases?

Hi Matt-
He sources from numerous vineyards. He doesn’t own or manage any himself, so he’s free to choose vintage to vintage.
In our visit, he detailed a number of them. It’s quite a variety…Napa, central coast, he’s even looking at some Amador Grenache currently. So, I would defer to Bobby for all the details, too many for me to recall!
I was sad to hear that many 2020 Cabernets were not bottled by the originating wineries due to concern over consumer acceptance, though many (including the wines Bobby made) were completely, objectively fine and clean. I believe he agreed to nondisclosure, so again I’d defer to him on that.
In addition to my B-Day buys (Nectar Dance, Unfamiliar Truth, Brevity Pinot, Bolide), I picked up some Spring Theory.

The “Bolt of Cloth” I have been sourcing from a vineyard from the western hills of Oakville for five years now. I began by making it for one of my clients and they kept offering me more. So, I began bottling it under Chiron in 2019. The name “Bolt of Cloth” is to imply that every vintage may come from a different source, but both 2019 and 2020 came from the same land. This vineyard doesn’t sell to anyone else and they don’t allow me to put it on the label. Black Powder is always a blend of declassified barrels from a myriad of mine and client’s barrels, as well as some bulk wine I purchase from colleagues. Typically, stuff that doesn’t make the cut for our single-vineyard bottlings. Hope you enjoy the wines! Pop a bottle soon.

Happy to add my note on Black Powder from FallTacular earlier this year and the Lucid Dream PN from last fall’s FallTacular:

2019 Black Powder Oakville Cab

Saturated nose of plum, black cherry and christmascake. Quite rich to taste, blasts of red and purple fruit but also plenty of underlying acid kick. 5 years should help this wine some.

2018 Chiron Lucid Dream PN

Herb-tinged raspberry and rhubarb bouquet. Oh–that’s quite a plush and fun cherry-filled entry, spreads out nicely in the mouth with a touch of cinnamon and sandalwood as accents. Definitely got my attention. # 7 (out of 36 wines tasted that day)

After reading here, I was intrigued and just bought one of each of the four available Black Powder wines. There was a minor issue and Bobby was on it almost immediately. Looking forward to trying these.

Hey Bobby thanks for hopping on and giving me some direct info. I’m excited to try both and am waiting for the occasion to open one. I think in my frantic ordering in Spring I did not even realize that you made a Grenache so I’m adding that to my radar. I will definitely be opening up one of each before Fall but hope I can make a visit sooner.

Matt,

My passion is 100% Grenache from very well-farmed sites in California. Currently sourcing from Santa Rita Hills, Los Alamos, Santa Maria Valley, Napa, westside Paso, and Amador. Lots of stem inclusion, native fermentations without fining or filtration, and aged all in puncheon with little to no racking. Let’s get some in your cellar.

Bobby makes some great wines, all of which are worth checking out (especially the Grenache). And I don’t say that because he’s a good friend. I’m equally obsessed with the variety and have always been impressed by how thoughtful his approach is in making his wines. Really shows, imo.

Thanks Grams for posting the notes in support of Bobby’s work. Yes, he’s been supporting Falltacular with wine now and he’s also been donating large formats and also visit/tours to the winery via the Falltacular silent auction.

I dig when we see posts up here for guys like Bobby, who extend their work into charitable efforts to help others. It helps for people to know this, to know they are supporting a winery like this who also gives back to the community.

Thanks for the notes! I bought three bottles of the 2015 Unfamiliar Truth on BD. Could only wait a week after I got them to open a bottle and this is my tasting note:

This is the best Grenache that I have ever had from California. Aromas of fresh strawberries, red licorice, blood orange, sage, and rosemary leads the way to the palate that is fresh and intense with great energy. Tastes of strawberries, lemon peel, and white pepper continue on the finish for well over a minute!
