A tasting with Will Segui. Some TRB barrel samples (read 2010 Maybach!) and RMs in bottle.

Firstly, Will Segui is a great guy. Passionate, fun and knowledgeable. Meeting TRB was like suddently turning a corner and running into a rock star writing a new song. I didnt say something for fear of saying something stupid. Will not only showed us through a bunch of great wines but also got us a last second reservation at Redd (where the RM Sonoma coast will be poured by the glass in the very near future btw!) Thank you again Will and I havent forgotten the Pappy!
PS dinner at Redd was spectacular. Jai liked it better than Cyrus. We ordered the tasting menu and we each got different dishes which was interesting. I also got a second helping of lamb because “Redd felt that he shorted you on the meat.” I think he saw me through the glass as I was sitting in direct line of sight from the kitchen  Dinner at Cyrus was amazing, I liked the food a bit better personally but I like the molecular gastronomy stuff.

  • 2009 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley (11/4/2011)
Soft and smooth cool fruits on the nose. A little dust. The palate is tight and stingy, releasing nothing. We would have given it some air but for being attacked by an uninvated geriatric posse so we rant to the barrel room.

  • 2009 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Corona Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (11/4/2011)
More acid and structure than the Panek. Somewhat less slutty on the nose and palate both. Well balanced with oak, cool fruits, savory spices dancing a tight waltz. Again, more air might have helped but we had to run or get assaulted by the geriatric brigade.

  • 2009 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena (11/4/2011)
Banging nose of dark berries and baking spices. Delicious big, slutty, sweet palate. Great, smooth finish. This is my favorite of the three on pop and pour.

Pulido Walker 2010 Cab. Barrel sample. New project from Pritchard Hill. Awesome attack on this wine with cocoa and red berries. Falls a little short on the finish. This is an unblended sample and the final product will likely have other clones added.

Maybach Materium 2010. Barrel sample. HOLY SHIT. This was the best juice to pass my lips in my short four days in Napa. Already balanced and soft in the right places. Amazing coffee note in the mid palate that really made me want to go drink coffee with caramel in it. Dark fruits, spices, caramelly oak in both nose and palate. This wine tilted my circuits already.

Maybach Amoneus 2010. Barrel sample. The new Maybach the name might not be spelled correctly. Nose of dark berries and some oak. More structured and tighter than the Materium at this point. The tannins are more pronounced and the fruit not as hedonistic yet. Very interesting. This one tasted like a barrel sample. Cant wait.

Harris Lakeview 2010. Barrel sample. Cool blue fruits on the nose. Most restrained of the bunch. Great sense of balance somehow but tight tight tight.

Jones 2010 Barrel sample. Will thinks this block will comprise most of the big cab. Another holy shit wine. Flowery, spicy nose. Most bottle like of the bunch. Touches every crevice of the palate but feels very light at the same time. Crazy mix of power and balance. The fruit is already succulent, more red than black and delicious. Again, awesome mouthfeel.

Outpost Howell 2010. Barrel sample. Not much on the nose but the palate shows dark berries, red berries and nice acid. Very primary but a good wine already.

Thanks for the notes Humberto! -mJ

sounds like an awesome time. thanks for the notes. agreed will is a fantastic guy. it was such a treat to taste through a bunch of rivers marie pinots with him in june.

how long do you plan to hold each of the cabs before digging in? can’t wait to try them.

looking forward to the next release from maybach.

Berto, thanks for the notes. Mr Segui is good people and I was able to work the sort table with him last weekend when we went through Mr Nordhoff’s Cardiac Hill 2011 pick. Glad he could take you around. I appreciate the early Maybach impression and being the only cab that I buy, good to see a positive impression of the 2010. Last year’s release order really socked me in the wallet so it’s one I have to plan ahead for and bean count. Appreciate the post.

I think panek right out of the gate the blend in a year or two and corona two to fourish? We heard about your exploits frank

Humberto,
I realize this is a really old post, but do you recall, or care to compare the Pulido Walker Panek vs. the RM Panek? I LOVE the RM Panek, and the PW offer just debut @ 165. On the fence at that price…

I really liked the PW project (TRB, Panek & Pritchard Hill), but coming out at $165 makes it tough to get on board when I can buy Panek from RM & Rudius for a lot less.

Maybe I am missing something

Great post, Berto. Thanks for posting. Panek on 09 is super as is Maybach in 10. Glad you enjoyed them as much as I. They both are (in your words) HOLY SHIT wines.
Cheers!

Im likely going to do it again this march jody. If I get to try the final product Ill let you know. As you say that post was a while back and the PW was not the final blend. From what I remember Id rather have a few RM but I never had the final product.
Thanks King Cab.

Cool. Yes, please report back if you get to taste the final product. I’m curious about the melanson too if you can get Will to pull a sample!

Great notes! Thanks for passing them along!

Pulido-Walker is actually on Mt. Veeder and has cab and chard planted there. They buy from Panek and Melanson. I’m not sure when the Estate wine will be released.
