A question regarding Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru (VV)

Hi everyone,

So recently I ordered 3 bottles of 2022, Hubert Ligner Morey St. Denis 1er Cru VV

the labels of the bottles I received were named: 2022, Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis Premier Cru

I contacted my supplier and he told me they were invoiced for the VV and that they have only received these. I thought that maybe Lignier had made a mistake, but then i checked online…

I checked the following resources:

Vinous
Robert Parker
Insideburgundy
WineSearcher
Their own website: hubert-lignier.com

None of these mention any Morey St. Denis Premier Cru, but only the VV variant.

What has happened here? Is the label off? Should it have said 1er Cru VV? or is it a whole nother bottle? Anyone have any info?

to add to this, the Morey St Denis 1er Cru VV is a blend of the two 1er Cru: Faconnières and Chenevery, wines that do not show up on their own, and them being some of their prime real estate I would imagine they still are the contents of the MSD Premier Cru

If you look at CT all the labels say VV. But there isn’t a photo of '22 so either they changed the label or came out with a young vine cuvée.

Yes that is true. Everywhere it says VV.

The thing is. I ordered the VV, the importer were invoice for the VV and now we have the MSD Premier Cru. Which doesn’t seem to exist neither in reviews or on Hubert Lignier’s website :open_mouth:

That’s from Leon and son’s website, so at least there are some 22 vv.

Yes i saw that one. And thats the one I wanted. and the one my supplier was invoice for.

The big question is why, and why the “non-VV” cuvee does not show up anywhere.

Do you have a photo of the label? If the label states Hubert Lignier (rather than Domaine Hubert Lignier) this may be your answer. Laurent does have a small negociant line (like his Chambolle VV and Clos Vougeot), so this may be from non-domaine fruit he has purchased and not from the Faconnieres/Chenavary plots.

I haven’t been poured the negoce wines on my visits (and haven’t asked), so if this a new negoce cuvee I woudln’t be the most in the know person on the subject. The one I did know about was the Griotte, which I believe he stopped making with the 2020 vintage.

I think this is it!

What must have happened is that my supplier received the Negoce Hubert Lignier 1er cru. But they were invoiced the Domaine VV version… all the papers say this. So its a mistaken delivery to them (and they didn’t notice before now)

Has to be it!

I wouldn’t presume to be 100% certain since I’ve not asked anyone at the Domaine, but I strongly expect this is correct. The labeling from certain Domaines can create a little confusion because the differences are subtle, so I’m not shocked someone in the retail chain made a mistake, especially since the names are similar.
I’d say I’ll ask next time I visit, but I’m sure someone will have more certain information before that.

The bottle also doesn’t say Domaine Hubert Lignier – just Hubert Lignier.

Probably negoce, as you noticed.

I think it’s the answer. Except they paid for the domaine version. So the domaine made a mistake + the supplier made a mistake as they didn’t notice!

Sadly not the first time a similar mistake has been made and also sadly won’t be the last. Envoyer made a similar screw up with an advertised and sold as Domaine Fevre wine, but shipped a negotiant Fevre wine. They didn’t notice it, but their customers did!

Happens. In industry people ship the wrong parts all the time.

Hopefully they can resolve it to your satisfaction.

Someone out there buying this wine on a restaurant wine list for $600…

considering how well known and singular the vv morey 1er is from hubert lignier, i find this terribly misleading for the domaine to be associated with. its just going to cause repeated mistakes for the majority of folks.

I completely agree. However its not just the retail chain that made the mistake here, the domaine did also send them the wrong cuvee

I sincerely believe that your merchant should ask for those bottles back, refund and promise to try get the correct wine, and work this out with his supplier in a way that you don’t have to think about it again.

So the only difference here is ‘domaine’ in small letters above Hubert Lignier? Burgundy has always had a reputation as a ‘minefield’, but this seems to me like something that was more acceptable many years ago that is less acceptable now. The difference with Dujac for instance is subtle but far more clear.

Fourrier is a pretty subtle difference, but to be fair, he does farm a lot of his negoc plots.

Here is Domaine Fourrier on left, Gevrey 1er Moines;
Jean Marie Fourrier Clos Vougeot, on the right (negociant)

Update:

They took the bottles back and returned the money. As they should. But I would rather have received the 3x MSD 1er VV that i wanted :frowning:
