I purchased a case of the 1993 Jean et Jean-Louis Trapet Chambertin a number of years ago and have opened a few bottles over the past ten years with fairly disappointing experiences. This wine came across at clumsy, tannic, and lacking balance and depth of flavor. I had pretty much thought this would never amount to anything interesting and surely not great.
I felt like an older Burgundy last night and decided to give this wine another chance. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how this wine has finally come together. While I would not call it a great wine it was quite a nice drink and a good example of Chambertin. The wine was dark ruby in color showing some light bricking around the rim. The nose was dark cherry, forest floor, earth, and some floral components. Mature flavors of dark fruit with a medium body. The tannins were pretty much resolved and the finish was fairly persistent. I really liked this wine and was happy to see that setting it aside had finally paid off. I do not believe this wine will improve much but it should hold for awhile. I would rate this wine 90-91 pts.
